Book Description

*******Text Available 6/25/2004!********** Applied Numerical Methods with MATLAB for Engineering and Science is the newest book by best-selling author Steve Chapra. The new text uses MATLAB as the primary computing environment and focuses on applications. Theory is included only when it has direct use to the student; i.e., when theory informs the concepts. Information relating to the limitations of methods and to choosing among different methods is stressed throughout the book. The book includes algorithms, but the algorithms will be presented as MATLAB M-Files, rather than pseudocode. Chapra's familiar instructor- and student-friendly style and pedagogical features are hallmarks of this highly anticipated new text.

3.0 out of 5 stars Over priced, July 7, 2010
This book is okay as a reference book to help you learn Matlab beyond just the basic
language features. However, you will need another book as the
main text to learn numerical methods. Be warned that each chapter touches the
subject in a very superficial way. The book also feels quite thin at your hand. For $127, this is
outrageously over priced. $30-35? Maybe. I teach numerical methods in a college. I will
never recommend this book to my students because I do not want them to get ripped off.

5.0 out of 5 stars had to learn MatLab, September 29, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I have to learn MATLAB for a current course. Good book with example problems. The assignment problems at the end of the chapters can be pretty difficult though. I would have liked to see the book come with a student version of MatLab. Nobody I know has MatLab for their personal use, and I have to go to the university every time to use it....

1.0 out of 5 stars Not the best book out there!, September 20, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This book will not teach you MATLAB. It is probably not intended for the person with little programming experience, but it still doesn't completely explain MATLAB functions or commands in great detail. You get a brief and simple example for the different types of files and commands. MATLAB can be much more complex. The tutorials with MATLAB will serve you more justice. This book was a waste of money in terms of learning the software from a book. You might as well just buy MATLAB and learn from the turorials and by trial and error.
