Won Y. Yang has been a professor at Dept. of Electrical Engineering of Chung-Ang University, Seoul, Korea, since 1986. (Personal Homepage: http://wyyang53.com.ne.kr, Email Address: wyyang53@hanmail.net) He has earned B.S. in Electrical Eng. from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, 1975, M.S. in Electrical Eng. from Seoul National University, Seoul, Korea, 1981, M.S. in Applied Math. from University of Southern California, LA, U.S.A., 1985, and Ph.D. in Electrical Eng. from University of Southern California, LA, U.S.A., 1986.
He is working on the project of a book titled
"MIMO-OFDM Wireless Communication with MATLAB", which will be published
by Wiley in 2010, and will work on "Digital Signal Processing with MATLAB" and
"Control System with MATLAB". He authored

The authors demonstrate how Matlab can be used for advanced numerical calculations. Many Matlab books just use numerical examples that are really elementary, from a scientific or engineering viewpoint. Those texts are more about teaching Matlab. Hence they choose simple examples, to reach a broad audience. Whereas the audience for this book is rather select. Probably tending towards professionals in the physical sciences or engineering. Or possibly grad students in these fields.

The text starts with matrix [linear] algebra. Explaining how to invert a linear system of equations. Then the book goes onto finding roots of non-linear equations, using Newton-Raphson iteration. And the always useful methods of numerical differentiation and integration. Plus other topics. Each chapter has an extensive problem set.

A central theme is that you don't need much previous knowledge of Matlab. The book guides you into its abilities to help your research.

I have looked at about 20 matlab books and this is by far the best one you can buy. This book provides examples using m-files and is very easy to understand.

The book is very well organized , with good descriptions and code related to the numerical methods presented. It is an excellent reference book for everyone using numerical methods and Matlab, with a slight emphasis on engineering.

We have been using this book for two years at the School of Agricultural Engineering and it has proven to be an invaluable help to teaching Applied Mathematics. Students have the possibility of using the big number of M-files in the book to solve homework problems and implement other algorithms to solve more difficult problems. This book represents a "Quantum Leap from "FORTRAN " because it enables students of Science and Engineering to solve real life problems and learn numerical methods. It utilizes the graphic capabilities of Matlab so the students can see the behaviour of the solutions they are seeking to problems , helping with the interpretation of the solution. I wholeheartedly recommend this book
