1.0 out of 5 stars Incomplete product
This book's examples and problem sets require software and data sets that are supposed to be contained in a CD attached to the back cover. However, the book I received has no CD attached. Amazon.com does not provide a phone number (or at least is is very obscure, since I have not yet found one) in order to resolve the problem. Frustrating!

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for first edition, May 9, 2002

This review is from: Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists: Using Microsoft Excel & Minitab (Paperback)
I used this textbook for a course in statistics. I must say that it was better then the first time that I had taken statistics 5 years ago. The book uses one or two data sets per chapter that helps you focus your thoughts while learning the different techniques. A nice feature about this book that wasnt available 5 years ago is the Excel and Minitab examples which saves a lot of time that is ordinarly spent on copious number crunching. I would have given the book 5 stars, however I found some obvious errors in the book that should have been edited out before the release. Good starter book for sats.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very Practical Book, November 29, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists: Using Microsoft Excel & Minitab (Paperback)
I have found this book to be very useful with practical examples and case studies. I felt that as an engineer I needed to know how to use software(to save time)along with the formulas that work in it.This book satisfies that, using a very common software EXCEL..what could be better than this.
I strongly recommend this book for a high level course in statistics.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can actually understand it!, March 18, 2009
This review is from: Applied Statistics for Engineers and Scientists: Using Microsoft Excel & Minitab (Paperback)
This textbook is a necessary resource for a intro to statistics class. It is worded well and is not convoluted. The examples are helpful and equations used are explained thoroughly. The companion software is a little outdated but a free update for excel is available online. The companion software is amazing in itself. A great buy, a definitely cheaper than any university book store!

4.0 out of 5 stars CD Level, September 16, 2011

The book is really great. I have an old copy with the CD. Just tried to use the CD and found out that Excel 2003 is not supported by the version on the CD (Update not available). I notice that the description of the book does NOT contain the Excel version supported by the CD. If you get an old text/CD, the CD may be useless.

4.0 out of 5 stars Positive, October 19, 2011

This book can for sure give a positive contribution to beginners in Quality and, as the title correctly describe, for Engineers and scientists who needs to get a quick but deep approach to the matter.
Peculiarly effectives are the chapters 1 (Introduction to statistics and Quality improvement) and 2 (Tables and Charts) and 3 (Describing and summarizing datas). Personally I think that one must give a good effort in presenting the data for gaining the immediate understanding to the people the datas are addressed.
Chapters 4 (Probability and discrete probability distribution) and 5 (Continuous probability distributions and sampling distributions) are representing a good introduction to the Probability study (even if it has been tailored for goal of the book).
Chapters 6 (Statistical process control charts I: Bassic Concepts and attributes charts) and chapter 7 (Statistical process control charts II: Variables control charts) are giving a good introduction to SPC, l Chapter 8 (Estimation Procedures) is a really well written key chapter for chapter 9 (Introductin to Hypothesis Testing) in which a good set of testing are explained.
Chapter 10 (The Design of Experiments: One factor and Randomized block Experiments) and Chapter 11 (The Design of experiments: Factorial Design) are a superficial (but well written and easy to read) introduction of DOEs. Especially in chapter 10 ANOVA are, to me, well described.
The book ends with Chapter 12 (Simple linear regression) and Chapter 13 (Multiple Regression) in which the subjects are well explained and described.

Finally, this book has a didactic touch, you can find in it a lot of excercises with which challenge your understanding and it is pleasant to be read. Personally I rate it with a well deserved 4 stars.
