Editorial Reviews

Review

"Jim and Larry breathe life into the technical details of S88.01, and the result is both entertaining and informative." -- Michael Saucier, Chairman and Founder, Sequencia Corp.

From the Inside Flap

Making S88 as Easy as...Ice Cream

When Jim Parshall and Larry Lamb got the job of implementing a more flexible batch control system at a well-known ice cream producer, they soon focused on the ISA S88.01 standard. Applying S88: Batch Control from a User's Perspective offers a practical, step-by-step look at what they learned along the way. It provides a clear, hands-on guide to understanding, justifying, and implementing the S88 concept, applicable to a wide range or process industries.

Well, this was a technical book that was actually written to be understood. The authors were able to say what needs to be said in just 150 pages. That was great. There is no need to stuff a book with junk. The great physicist Ernest Rutherford said, "If you can't explain your physics to a barmaid it is probably not very good physics". That is true. Indeed, Jim and Larry were able to explain S88 to barmaid! That was quite an achievement. This book worth the price.

Very good insight into S88, considering there isn't much else on the market and the author had to learn it from scratch and even then talk to the ISA S88 committee members. After going through this book in detail, I'm amazed that the ISA S88 committee members didn't realize they were creating an abstract standard with terminology that is so general that it's not understandable. Jim Parshall - two thumbs up. ISA S88 committee - thumbs down for detachment from reality.

This is first place to start when getting into S88 and batch control. The language is written so everybody in your organization can read it from the instrument tech, to the process engineer, to the plant manager.
The book helps clear up a lot the confusing nomenclature from the actual standard by using real world examples.
