A must for any Civil War buff!,
By A Customer
This review is from: The Appomattox Campaign: March 29-april 9, 1865 (Great Campaigns Series) (Hardcover)
Historian Chris Calkins does a marvelous job re-creating the last days of the war in this vivid and well-written work. Mr. Calkins, who was a historian at Appomattox and now is the Park Historian at Petersburg National Battlefield, uses his years of experience and knowledge of the last campaign of the War to construct an excellent narrative that explains the final fight for Petersburg and Grant's pursuit of Lee to Appomattox. Excellent maps and superb sidebars on general officers on both sides. I wish he went more in depth on the battles, though. The "bible" for the last week of the War!

Greg Eanes, author of "Black Day of the Army, April 6, 1865: The Battles of Sailor's Creek" says Chris
Calkins' work is:"THE Appomattox Campaign Overview. Chris is the Chief Historian at Petersburg Battlefield National Park and formerly worked at Appomattox National Historical Park and has a solid grasp on the Appomattox Campaign and the Petersburg Campaign that preceded it. He provides an expert narrative of the movement of Federal and Confederate armies providing ample sidebar vignettes of historical interest. A MUST for Civil War Buffs."

PEACE IN VIRGINIA,

This review is from: The Appomattox Campaign: March 29-april 9, 1865 (Great Campaigns Series) (Hardcover)
Chris Calkins has written a masterpiece on the final twelve days of the American Civil War in the Richmond/Petersburg theatre of operations. As the Petersburg Campaign draws to a close march with the veterans of the Army of Northern Virginia as their fighting spirit takes flight in hopes of crossing into North Carolina and merging with General Joseph Johnston's Army of Tennessee. Vividly relive the struggle the soldiers undergone on their desperate retreat march. With the Confederate Government on the run and surrender just over the horizon, this military campaign as written by Calkins will not disappoint the avid Civil War Reader.
