5.0 out of 5 stars Easy to Understand Text on Appraisal
I purchased a copy of Appraisal Procedures for Counselors and Helping Professionals by Robert J. Drummond in order to review for the National Counselor Exam. It had been a number of years since I had taken a class in appraisal and I felt that I needed to brush up on the terms and basic principles. I found this book to be very helpful. 1.0 out of 5 stars Many critical typos
This book is not for people who do not understand statistics because there are typos in the book on important things such as definitions, answers to stats formulas, and in addition, the associated on-line grading chapter questions. Page 39 is just one example. The explanation of a Z-score has a typo. Below that, the example formula of a T-score is incorrect. Trying to...

Trying to figure this stuff out has been beyond frustrating. I do not recommend this book until they fix the published errors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Back edition saves $, July 26, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This text was required for a course I took on appraisal and assessment procedures. I decided to buy the 5th edition because it was much, much cheaper than the current edition (which I believe is the 7th). The fifth edition shares most of the same information as the newest edition (i did a comparison of the two when I purchased, then returned the most recent text from the school book store). The chapters aren't in the same order, but unless you're being tested on the text book verbatim, it's not necessary to spend the extra cash.

This review is from: Appraisal Procedures for Counselors and Helping Professionals (4th Edition) (Hardcover)
The material is presented in an easy to understand format. I was worried about the appraisal section on the NCE. After reviewing this book, I felt much more confidnet about being successful on the appraisal section of the test. I recently took the NCE and passed. And, I actually did ok on the appraisal questions. I would recommend this book as an excellent review.

4.0 out of 5 stars Drummond's textbook, September 5, 2005

Students whose field of studies will take them into research and/or testing procedures should consider this book. It covers the historical and philosophical foundationsof testing, the ethical issues involved, and goes into great detail on all the statistical aspects of appraisal. Parts of it are over my head but this is due to my poor math background rather than the author's style and content.

The first five chapters are basically a review of what any student would have learned in a basic intro to research course. After that, the chapters are brief and simply written making it easy for students to capture the essence of the material quite easily.

4.0 out of 5 stars Basic, May 10, 2009

The textbook is basic and cover most assessments that a counselor may use or see during counseling. It provides basic details for most measures and that is its biggest weakness is that it is to basic. Most of the assessments I learned about in undergrad school. I was hoping for more meat and more detail when it came to the MMPI and other measures of psychopathology.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good cover, wrong description though., January 5, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The book arrived on time and even though it was used, the cover was in really good condition. But the description didn't mention there was high lighting in the book and that kinda threw me off cause I don't like highlighted books. All in all, good service.
