Book Description

October 2004
Chelsea Quinn Yarbro is best known for her suave, vampire-about-the-world Count Saint-Germain, but she is also an accomplished short fiction writer as well. Five Star is proud to present the best of her dark fantasy and horror fiction all in one collection. Featuring a brand-new short story, "Fugues," and an introduction by noted editor Patrick LoBrutto, Apprehensions and Other Delusions is a feast of psychological thrills and chills that readers will enjoy for many dark nights to come.

Aside from writing, Chelsea Quinn Yarbro has worked as a cartographer, read tarot cards and palms, and composed music, all of which she continues to do. Over the years she has studied seven different instruments, voice, and musical theory: composition, voice, and piano have continued to be active interests for her. (20021201)

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Yarbro is best known for her long-running series about the vampire Saint-Germain, who is nowhere to be found in these 13 stories retrieved from magazines, a horror convention program, and a chapbook. The stories explore a weird, eerie, and bizarre world--the one we all inhabit. In "Fugues," about a pianist who leases a piano with a curse attached to it, Yarbro plays with readers' expectations of what will happen. In "Renfield's Syndrome," a teenager finds that drinking the blood of small animals gives him power and helps him escape his unhappy home. The hero of "Giotto's Window," an American boy abroad in Florence, sees people as monsters and is believed to be insane, but the nurse sent to bring him home soon realizes otherwise. "Traditional Values" is a good, old-fashioned sf yarn in which humanity has embraced the practice of having each person change gender at crucial stages in his or her lifetime. An excellent collection for Yarbro's fans and horror aficionados in general. Kristine Huntley

Review

"From a darkly humorous tale of the power of words (Death and the Librarian) to a never-before-published response to events of September 11 (Ilion), Friesner's 12 stories illustrate the author's acutely sensitive vision of wonder in the everyday world... Known primarily for his 'Star Wars' novels... Zahn's short stories also deliver strong plots and memorable characters... Zebrowski's many novels (e.g. Macrolife) mark him as a visionary as well as a master of hard sf. The ten short stories collected in In the Distance provide a benchmark of his creativity... the author expands his concept of the human condition to embrace the stars. Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent author's, these three volumes belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."
-- Library Journal (December 2002) (Library Journal 20020615)

"...Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent authors, these three volumes (Death and the Librarian and Other Stories/ Star Song and Other Stories/ In the Distance, and Ahead in Time) belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."
-- Library Journal (December 2002) (Library Journal )

"Four more titles in Five Star's new series (God Is an Iron and Other Stories/ Generation Gap and Other Stories/ The Lady Vanishes and Other Oddities of Nature/ Suppose They Gave a Peace and Other Stories) of short fiction by noteworthy sf authors offer a variety of tales that illustrate the depth and staying power of the genre...Most of the stories in these volumes have only appeared in periodicals. Libraries wishing to augment their sf or short fiction collections should consider any of them."

5.0 out of 5 stars strong collection, December 26, 2003
If readers are like me, they will first search this thirteen, mostly longer short story horror anthology to seek out any Saint-Germain tales. While there are no direct Saint-Germain entries, one inclusion "Fruits of Love" is a well written "tangential to HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA", which of course this reviewer read first (nothing says one must read an anthology in sequence; nor read every contribution though you will with this compilation).

The other twelve tales match the excellence of "Fruits of Love" while displaying the vastness of Ms. Yarbro's talent to write outside or on the peripheral of the vampire novel realm. Twelve of the stories were initially released in other publications with two from the 1980s, six from the 1990s, and four from the current decade. There is also one new delightful story, "Fugues" that highlight the author's ability to keep the reader in suspense as to whether it is about a psychological problem or possession. No delusion, APPREHENSIONS AND OTHER DELUSIONS is the real thing when it comes to strong horror suspense.
