More About the Author

Joseph F. Patrouch is a historian of early modern central Europe who currently teaches at Florida International University in Miami, FL USA. He has published two books on the histories of the lands of the Habsburg Dynasty in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries: A NEGOTIATED SETTLEMENT (2000) and QUEEN'S APPRENTICE (2009). In addition, he has edited and translated an academic guidebook to the geographies of contemporary Vienna titled UNDERSTANDING VIENNA (2006). Professor Patrouch has published numerous articles in reference works and periodicals about Austria, Vienna, the Habsburgs, Sigmund Freud, sports in Austria, and other topics. He is an editor of the online discussion group HABSBURG (N-Net) and a member of the Executive Committee of the Society for Austrian and Habsburg History. He earned his PhD at the University of California, Berkeley and has been a guest professor at the University of Vienna and a guest researcher at institutes in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic.
