This review is from: The TEACCH Approach to Autism Spectrum Disorders (Issues in Clinical Child Psychology) (Hardcover)
I found this book useful on so many different levels. First, as a teacher of students with autism and related conditions, there were so many ideas to try. Second, as a parent of an adolescent on the spectrum, I found the sections on adults very informative. Mesibov is one of those rare professionals that takes into account the perspectives of those on the autism spectrum. This book not only recognizes individuality, but celebrates it! Truly one of the most helpful books I have come across!

This review is from: The TEACCH Approach to Autism Spectrum Disorders (Issues in Clinical Child Psychology) (Hardcover)
This is an excellent resource for understanding the philosophy of the treatment orientation known as TEACCH. As you read, you realize just how deeply committed these people are to partnerships with people with ASD and their families. Theirs is not a doctor/patient relationship, but is rather a cooperative effort in which each person appreciates and builds on the other's strength. In this sense, autism becomes more a particular way of looking at the world than a disability; that is, people with autism are supported through an understanding of their strengths and not their difficulties. TEACCH looks at what is possible, not what can never be because of a diagnostic label. Well written, thoroughly researched and an easy read. I recommend it highly.
