Book Description

January 21, 1985 0201044986 978-0201044980 2 Sub
This celebrated book, newly revised and updated, is a comprehensive treatment of organizational training and development: its basic ideas, organizational goals, and practical techniques. Dugan Laird, noted trainer, consultant, and author, shares his considerable experience in the whole field of human resource development and job-related training. The key to this book’s ongoing popularity is its practicality: Laird’s concern with the real-life problems and needs of T&D professionals. When and how should training be used, and what methods and techniques have worked and will work? The author's answers are supplemented by simple-to-follow process charts that outline each step of an effective training system. For this Second Edition, Laird has added material on new training technologies such as video and computer assisted instruction, explaining how and when they should be used to supplement traditional instructional techniques. How do you find training needs? What do you do when you don’t give training? Learning objectives: who needs them? How do people learn? How important is teaching technique?

4.0 out of 5 stars Practical Guide for Training & Development, July 26, 2000

This review is from: Approaches To Training And Development (Hardcover)
Dugan's book is an excellent resource for both instructor's and T&D managers. It is filled with useful information covering the entire spectrum of training in organizations in an easy to understand format. Despite it's relative age, the information is current and beneficial. I would highly recommend this book for anyone in a training position, and especially as a guide for new training managers.

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid book!, April 11, 2004
By A Customer
This is a thorough and up-to-date textbook on the training and development of human resources. No gimmicks and excellent references. The writing is straight-forward with a nice balance between theory and practice. The authors don't preach and don't talk down to readers.

2.0 out of 5 stars Very technical for the topic, January 12, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
If you're expecting a light read regarding training, this is not the book for you. It's very technical. If you need complex ROI calculations, this may be good to pick up, but if you're just a plain ol training coordinator looking to improve your skills, you may want to pick up one of the Dummies books.
