In this videotape Jay Haley presents a practical model for brief therapy that formulates problems so they are solvable. He takes the viewer step by step through this case which he "live supervised." The emphasis is on a variety of ways to plan therapy, some of them unusual, and specific techniques to use. The focus here is brief, active, and family oriented.
In this video a therapist is expecting a routine child problem and finds himself treating a family in crisis. Jay Haley emphasizes the decisions that have to be made as each new situation arises in the therapy process. The problem is a typical one of a wife leaving a husband and trying to prevent him from falling apart. The husband's threats of suicide and violence are dealt with in a human way by the therapist, who must choose to behave according to professional procedures or become personally involved.
Jay Haley has been with the Mental Research Institute, the Philadelphia Child Guidance Clinic, the Family Therapy Institute of Washington DC and a professor at various universities. He has written 19 books on therapy, including Strategies of Psychotherapy, The Power Tactics of Jesus Christ, Uncommon Therapy, Leaving Home, Learning and Teaching Therapy and several films including Milton H. Erickson, MD Explorer in Hypnosis and Therapy.
Madeleine Richeport-Haley, PhD is an anthropologist-filmmaker whose work includes consultant to National Geographic in Brazil and documentaries appearing on PBS. As a WHO mental health consultant she has made therapy training films. She collaborated with Jay Haley on several films including Milton H. Erickson, MD Explorer in Hypnosis and Therapy, Dance and Trance of Balinese Children, and Whither Family Therapy?.
These cases are enacted for reasons of confidentiality. However, they are not improvised. Actors study a videotape filmed of the actual family and duplicate what is said and done.
