Book Description

December 7, 2005
The Approaching Winter: The Next Great Depression is a book that combines U.S. history and America's ever repeating cycles with a psychology that has been slowly changing form since the turn of the century. Within the next few years, America will have to come to grips with an approaching economic winter that could result in the worst depression in its 230 years of history. What we thought our children's children would have to struggle through may be ours to endure. As this book was being published by Author House, Americans experienced yet another great tragedy upon our soul as Hurricane Katrina ripped through the Gulf of Mexico coastline. This catastrophe, 9/11 and perhaps future events may be the triggers that will usher in the next great depression. As you read The Approaching Winter: The Next Great Depression, it may cause you to be fearful, angry and uncertain of our future. However, by reading this book you may be able to prepare yourself psychologically and perhaps economically to face the stormy and bitterly cold winter that awaits each and every one of us.

About the Author

Don Braby was raised on a dairy farm in southern Iowa with his parents and three sisters. He is an American just as apple pie and baseball are. As the only member of his family to attend college, Braby graduated in 1984 with a Bachelor of Science. He is married and has one child. Braby believes people repeat history because human nature never changes. He also believes a few people in the world today can actually see the future come at them in slow motion, just as only a few athletes have a six sense that allows them to perform at a much higher level than anyone else in their sport. Time will tell if Braby has this sixth sense for America''''s future.

2.0 out of 5 stars Philosophy, but that's about it, September 10, 2006
This review is from: The Approaching Winter: The Next Great Depression (Paperback)
This book, at 82 pages, is a quick read, and mainly a philosophical look at the spending habits of the US government and its citizens. It is a moral call to arms for Americans, as individuals, to take responsibility for what the author sees as the coming depression, based on our own poor behavior. The message is well taken, but the author offers little practical advice about what to do about the situation we find ourselves in as a nation. Indeed, he invokes the mercy of God and a return to more traditional behavioral values, including the individual responsibility to save and resist the "keeping up with the Jones'" mentality, as something we all need to do.

But I was looking for something more substantial. Yes, Braby is not off track morally, but what to do? If you want better answers, read "The Second Great Depression, Starting 2007, Ending 2020," by Warren Brussee, for a dispassonate and very practical look at how to survive the impending calamity.

4.0 out of 5 stars Winter at Our Doorstep, December 23, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: The Approaching Winter: The Next Great Depression (Paperback)
Don Braby is on target in his little book, The Approaching Winter. His basic premise is that America is headed for serious economic disaster. After decades of easy credit, out-of-control consumer spending and the insane price increases in the housing market, we are falling into the abyss.
Braby doesn't blame only consumers, however. He makes it clear that government, especially the Bush administration, is the cause for our approaching economic depression.
This book, published in 2005, shows the reader how accurate Braby's predictions have been. Most of what he wrote will happen, has begun to happen. Stock market nosedives, job losses across the nation, the crash of the housing market and the hault of easy credit are all harbingers of the next Great Depression. We are seeing these events unfold with no quick solution to prevent disaster.
Braby does not offer any solid solutions, beyond the vague suggestion that Americans need to change their attitudes and habits. Braby pins most of his hopes for divertingeconomic disaster on the new leadership after Bush leaves the White House. Let's hope he is right about the new administration having the courage to lead us out of the dark and deep abyss.

I liked this little book. However, if you are very, very hungry this little book is just a little snack. You can read the book in less than an hour. It's interesting and gives you several other books to read. I agree with Mr. Braby. The Next Great Depression is coming. I am not political. I dislike both Democrats and Republicans. They are different sides of the same coin. When you are bobbing up and down in the cold water, what difference does it make who was driving the ship when it hit an iceburg? Regards, Keith Renick, Peachtree City, Ga.
