Titanic is appropriate for a 9 yr old depending on the maturity level and perhaps watched with an adult to answer any questions.

C. Bauer says:
I'm a mom and I don't think this is an appropriate movie for a 9 year old to watch.....alone or with his/her friends. And NOT because of the scenes of intimacy. The scenes of death and dying have been very realistically filmed and acted. There is no happy ending for most of the passengers. And most if not all of the deaths are brutal and heart breaking. These could be very upsetting to nearly any 9 year old. A parent or guardian should watch this film with a youngster because of these scenes.
