Great, fast J.M. read, December 28, 2010
This review is from: April Evil (Mass Market Paperback)
I found this just before hopping on a plane for a holiday trip, and read it through both going and coming. Just what you'd expect from a John D. Macdonald 'Florida' book. Villains, tramps, drifters, hot babes with pasts, thieves, good guys, double crossers, a caper gone awry, etc. And, of course, the great, descriptive prose that lets you feel the heat and sand, hear the gulls and waves, smell the suntan oil, and get into each character's psyche. My only 'problem' with the book came towards the ending.....Caution....spoiler ahead!
When Ben Piersal's son, Toby, goes missing after being abducted by the criminals next door after he identifies one of them, the local police do not knock on the neighbors' doors to question anyone...? Especially after the neighbor introduced himself a few days earlier by yelling at, and threatening, the boy for fishing on his dock. I just found that pretty hard to look past, but really, in the course of the book, a minor annoyance. I love MacDonald's writing, and this is typical of his style. Fast paced, great descriptive prose and characterizations, sensual and erotic, sometimes brutal, and well plotted. A great, entertaining read.

True to John D's style, this lovely book contains all the correct pieces for an involved story. As always, the good guy wins as the baddies lose. An easy read.
