Fast shipping, good quality construction and design. Plastic housing is robust but I always pad it well in my bag. I use it in continuous output mode as flash is difficult to meter with macro. Perfect for close-focus video, no flicker. If you're serious about macro, still or video, then you need this. Lots more light than the 32, 48 or 60 LED models -works great with my AA rechargeables and is very efficient. Unit is small and easy to pack, lots of mounting rings from 49 to 77mm fit all my close-focus lenses. Not useful for general photos or portraits, of course, but indispensable for macro. I ordered it immediately upon finding it as I've wanted one for years but couldn't rationalize spending more for an occasional flash than I paid for my car. With the advent of LEDs and a price equal to a full tank of gas I couldn't pass it up. I'm so glad I took the plunge and splurged $50 on this; it's the best photo accessory since the tripod.

We bought a Nikon D3200 earlier this year, and are still experimenting with all it can do. When I was offered the chance to evaluate this new and improved flash ring, I was only mildly intrigued. After all, the camera comes with its own flash and we don't do professional photo shoots so I did not anticipate a great need for this sort of accessory.

Well, trying is believing. It only took a few test shots to demonstrate the outstanding qualities of this modestly priced product. There are lots of competing products at this price level but the obvious main difference is the number of LED units. Polaroid and Meike have 32, others have 48, this Amaran model has a staggering 100, but it's not just about brighter light. This unit has a smart colour rendering feature, which in essence means that, with proper adjustment, your subjects will not be washed out.

The usual applications are macro photography, small objects, scientific applications, even books or documents, anything where shadow-free, detailed photos are needed, but the various modes of use offer lots of creative options for portrait photography as well. The ring works in full mode (which is fabulous for video taking because the light output is constant, without any flickering), and flash, which is triggered by your camera. You can also choose to have only the right or left side lit. Each mode can be set in stepless increments to quarter, half and full power, giving you a lot of flexibility.

The unit takes 4 standard AA batteries and can be mounted directly on the hot shoe of your Nikon (there is a similar model for Canon cameras) with the flash mounted around the lens by means of one of eight rings (for our D3200, the correct size is 52mm but the adaptors range from 49 to 77mm).

I originally got this because it had a flash feature. The flash is not great by any means. It works. Be sure to have to on manual mode on your camera. What happens is, the ring light will be on and when the flash goes off, it will over expose the photo. To compensate, leave it about one stop underexposed. See my photos.

The Aputure ring flash has many good reviews so I won't go into too much detail here as I don't think I can add much more than what has been said. I will say it has proven to be a very good investment. I don't know how long it will last however I believe with care the flash will last for years. I dabble in close-up photography and this ring flash has made a difference in my images. Recently I shot some photos at the local city rose garden and i was impressed with how the light from the ring flash opened up the flowers. I will say that I do not feel this flash is very good at or meant to be used in a very dark setting where the only light is from the flash. I have had the best results such as at the rose garden where the sky was cloudy but bright and the ring flash was able to add that extra punch to the close-up photo. I have not yet used it for close portrait work or video however I have no doubt it will perform equally well. My negative on the unit is the adapter rings that come with the flash. The threads are very fine and fragile. I purchased a set of Fotasy metal step up rings and screwed one on each adapter. Now I have metal threads to screw on my lenses instead of the thin plastic threads that would strip very easily. I simply adapted the 55 flash adapter to the 52 threaded metal ring for my 52mm lens and so forth. Even though it increased the depth of the adapter as the instructions stated you shouldn't use the ring flash at less than 50mm focal length anyways so it was not a problem. I normally shoot my close-up photos (I use 1x, 2x, 4x, & 10x close-up filters as again I an amateur on a budget) at 100mm where I seem to achieve excellent results.

Works great for Macro photography. It's not bright enough for anything over a couple feet away.

Not exactly what I expected. It does everything it says it does. It's just a little awkward, even in flash mode seems to leave the lights on so it's harsh on faces and I get squinty people. Might just be something I have to figure out with the unit, but it's not really working for what I wanted to do with it. I guess a case of you get what you pay for.
