A Couple of Quirks...but they work,
By
This review is from: Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-Pack (Lawn & Patio)
I bought six of these to water my large potted plants while we are gone in the summer. Once receiving them, I immediately tried them. I filled them with water, made the hole in the dirt first with something else, and inserted the globes. Water started leaving the globes quickly and within 10-15 minutes, the globes were empty! I was hoping water would stay in the globes long enough to water the plants for at least one week, and they were empty. I soon realized that your plants have to be saturated with water FIRST, then as the dirt around the globes dries, water is released from the globe. Another thing, dirt does get trapped in the stem sometimes. Overall, just make sure that your plants are watered very well before you insert the globes, then they will slowly release the water the plant needs. I've had comments on how pretty they are in the plants also. I think they do the job without having to ask your neighbor to come water your plants while you're gone.

Beautiful AND useful,
This review is from: Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-Pack (Lawn & Patio)
Just fill with water, insert the stem into the soil in your hanging basket and it keeps those outdoor baskets from withering away. In my 16" geranium/petunia hanging basket, it dispensed water for 3 days during 90+ degree temps. I'll bring them in for winter watering of house plants. They have a beautiful art quality.

Worked but needed both for my one plant,

I ordered these to water my plant in the office while I'm away during the weekends. I needed to use both of them to sufficiently water my large (3ft.) peace lily. I did drop one of them and it broke, so I'm finding that just using one is not enough to keep the whole plant happy. I'm looking for alternatives that are maybe not so breakable, since I'm a bit of a klutz! They are kind of hard to fill and when dirt gets stuck in the end it takes some work to get it out. If I knew I wouldn't break it, I would probably order them again because they work okay and look pretty in the plant.

Glass Watering Ball, Mar. 2008,
By Ann Marie "AMK" (Hamburg, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-Pack (Lawn & Patio)
This product held sufficient water to feed two plants in 8" pots for two weeks. Climate was controlled by lowering indoor temp. Might not serve as well in outdoor windy conditions. Product seems fragile, having long glass tube. I consider it a good value. It served my purpose.

Going Global,
By
This review is from: Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-Pack (Lawn & Patio)
Aqua Globes are one of those myriad "as seen on TV" products that promise to change your life. Mrs. Spudman picked up a box along with the equally promising "Smooth Away" miracle that is also "seen on TV."
In the box were two Aqua Globes, each made of hand-blown glass, and even this skeptical Spudman must admit are somewhat attractive and stylish. The globes are about 11 inches long and far too fragile to put into the hands of your pet gorilla or chimpanzee. The long thin tips are "cut" at an angle at the ends to help with ease of filling and inserting into potting soil. When we bought our present home, we inherited a potted palm tree that's' close to five feet tall now. It showed signs of stress after being transplanted into a larger pot, so Mrs. Spudman chose it as a candidate for the Aqua Globes. After several weeks, I noticed that the Aqua Globes were still full of water and brought it to the attention of the Globe master. She pulled out the devices, cleaned compacted dirt from the ends, and reinserted them at a different angle and depth. This seemed to do the trick because the globes needed refilling about a week hence. One site I browsed suggesting putting a piece of screen around the tip of the Aqua Globe to prevent dirt clogs. Filling the globes is time consuming and tedious because one has to use a gentle, thin flow from the spigot. Mrs. Spudman started using a small funnel for filling and seems to be happier with this procedure. Before inserting the globes into the soil, one is advised to predrill a hole using a stick, dowel, chopstick, or screwdriver. An electric drill makes a big mess with flying dirt and is not recommended for making the preparatory hole. If you don't make an insertion hole first, you might break the globe's delicate neck or clog the end with soil, neither of which is desirable. It took some trial and error for Mrs. Spudman to determine just the right angle and depth for her Aqua Globes. They seem to be working as promised at the moment, and the palm tree test subject seems healthy and happy. Finally - Mrs. Spudman is relatively happy with her Aqua Globes though not particularly enthusiastic about them. We both agree that they are an attractive novelty. To ensure that a cherished plant is getting water while you're away on vacation, these Aqua Globes may not be a bad option. If you have many cherished plants, this option could become expensive. Mrs.Spudman sort of likes her Aqua Globes. I think they are silly and unnecessary gimmicks of dubious value that at least don't harm plants. Watering plants is not that much work and isn't all that time consuming. If you resent the time and effort spent watering houseplants, then maybe you shouldn't have any. Most importantly the use of Aqua Globes® deprives the plants of personal contact with their caretaker(s) , quality time shared, and the all important bonding experience. Thus I give them a lukewarm recommendation.

This thing actually works,
This review is from: Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-Pack (Lawn & Patio)
I followed the directions exactly, making a smaller diameter hole, filling the bulb slowly at an angle, and being sure that the bulb did not tilt at all once I inserted it into the soil. The bulb works like a charm. The plant I used it on (philodendron) was also a gift from another neighbor. I quit buying plants because I invariably killed all of them eventually by either overwatering, underwatering or plain neglect. The ones I have are all gifts and I feel so badly when they die that I nurse them back to health only to watch them die again. Not only does the Aqua Bulb work, it works very well. My neighbor gave me one and I almost laughed in her face but I accepted it and thought why not. I was very skeptical and thought it was another useless TV gimmick. I've been had so many times by those TV-offer products, I assume all of them are trash. The Aqua Bulb works. I don't know how it works because it's been at least 3 weeks since I began using it and it's nowhere near empty. I even wonder if that's good or not, but my plant is thriving so I'm here to purchase more. I'm sold.

The aqua globes are an attractive addition to my plants but they require very exact repeated attempts at placement. The stems of the globes tend to fill up with soil from the pot and create a barrier so that no water trickles out to keep the plant at the right level of moisture.

SAVE YOUR MONEY!,

This review is from: Aqua Globes AG011706 Glass Plant Watering Bulbs, 2-Pack (Lawn & Patio)
Do NOT, I repeat, do NOT make the same mistake that I did in buying this product. I have a lot of plants so I've spent over $100 on this nonsense. It is an absolute waste of time and money!
Oh, they look so pretty when initially you put them in... then the time comes to refill the bulbs. Then you realize that half of them are still filled with water because the dirt got into the narrow openings. So you carefully make sure that the bulbs have their holes made for them to avoid this happening in the future and hope for the best. Then you realize that the plants are hungrier than you thought. WITHOUT the bulbs, you need to feed/water your plants every 2-3 days. Guess what? WITH the bulbs, you still need to water your plants every 2-3 days! Only now, except just watering your plants, you will be spending 5 times more time in filing up the blasted bulbs in addition to watering your plants. So, a 10 minute job becomes 2-person 45 minute job. And for what? The bulbs BREAK at the slightest provocation, they have a hard time standing up until you prop them, the openings get stuffed with dirt and become impenetrable by any means other than a letter opener... It's a mess! In other words, AVOID LIKE PLAGUE and save your money!

I purchased a pair of aqua globes from target in their as seen on TV section. Those globes are very dainty and light weight. I loved them. They water my plants for a good week or two depending on the plant and despite a little dirt getting in the bottom, they work just fine. My plants are saved!
Because I loved them so much I ordered 2 sets from amazon. What arrived was a much larger, thicker, bulkier version of the aqua globes. When filled with water they almost tip my small house plants over (the others didn't). At first I was going to send them back but now I figure I will use them for some outdoor ferns I have in pots or for a large indoor tree I'd like to get. Just a warning, if you need to water a small or medium house plant, the ones that you get from Amazon might not work. The ones you can get at a store are the proper ones for that.

I have a lot of different kinds of plants and can not always water them when I want-so I put the globes in most of them(you can not use them easily in small pots as the bulb can fall over).
It's been 3 wks and it's been great! The 2 plants I have had trouble with(usually overwatering) are the happiest. Now I can leave for a few days when it's hot out and not worry. I propped up two bulbs so then can "water" two of my bigger bonsai. You must use a stick(chopsticks work great) to make the hole, put the globe in and see if it gets plugged up. Remove the plug if needed and reinsert-push the dirt back down one the bulb is in place. I have two in two outside plants that are in full sun and it has worked, also (they get extra water when its hot-the bulbs seem to help them not dry out) |
