Aqua Pure AP DWS 1000

Aqua-Pure® takes the worry out of ordinary tap water
The Aqua-Pure system uses an exclusive progressive porosity process, filtering water through increasingly tighter pores to help reduce microscopic particulate. It has a nominal filtration rating of 0.5 microns and operates at temperatures up to 100° F/37.8° C and water pressures up to 125 psi/862 kPa. The system has a flow rate of 0.6 gpm/2.3 Lpm and capacity of 625 gal/2,366 L.

Automatic shutoff ensures quick and easy filter changes
The Aqua-Pure AP-DWS1000 is designed with a built-in shut-off meter that automatically shuts off the system after 625 gallons/2,366 liters of water have been filtered. To change cartridges, simply twist off the old cartridge and twist on a new one—no tools required and no contact with soiled material.

Improving your home's water quality
Used to help improve water quality in food service operations, businesses and homes, drinking water filtration systems range from complex multi-filter systems at the point where water enters the house, to simple plug-in under sink units easily installed on the water line. Costs vary, but a carefully chosen water filtration system can pay off by replacing bottled water purchases and preserving fixtures and plumbing.

Water tastes great.
Change the filters every six months [there's even an automatic reminder that buzzes you when it needs a change].
One Happy Retiree
Installation was quick and easy although the instructions were not as helpful as I would have liked.

After several years of using pitcher based cartridges that are a fumble to work with, technically marginal in offering only minor purification and fairly costly in the long run, we decided to buy a more robust system. This unit is much better at removing nasties from the water - although our city water is reasonably pure to begin with. This under-sink system is more cost effective and far more convenient without the overflow bits of charcoal that tend to escape from more primitive filters. The installation took about 15 minutes ad was straightforward. The longest part of preparing however was finding one critical piece. The system ships with a T fixture to join with the under-sink cold water line that did not match our plumbing. Go to a plumbing supply company rather than the corner hardware store for this item if you need it. The flow is great. Having it on the sink means that we can more easily use this for all cooking as well as the quick refreshing drink.

This unit makes some great tasting water.
I've used one of these for over ten years and as far as the water goes I have no complaints.
I split it between my sink's drinking water and the ice maker in the refrigerator.

The only problem is the fittings for the copper tubing crack after years of use.
I keep my unit in the laundry room mounted on a wall in my basement under the kitchen. So one day we noticed they filter was dripping water. (This is better than actually putting it under the sink because it's easier to change the filters)

I examined the unit and saw two of the fittings had stress cracks and one was leaking.
I replaced both of them with copper fittings (something like $4 for the two fittings).
Now we're back in business.

I've researched and used several water filter products out there on the market. We have a family of 2+1 (under 2yrs old LO) and use filtered water on primarily on drinking, cooking and washing veggies/fruits. I started with over the faucet PUR and Brita system. These filter don't last more than a month in NYC water system. It eventually gets clogged up to a point where the water just drips instead of flow. I've also used a popular online brand aquasomething, a little more expensive on the filter side but also didn't last more than 2 months before clogging up.

I've used a 5 stage RO system in the past but our NYC cabinet space didn't allow such luxury so I decided to give 3M system a try after reading few reviews and research on its filter quality. I waited for about 6 months before writing this review. These carbon block filters are still going strong, although its apparent that the flow isn't as strong as it was during the first month but its still going at a good flow rate.

Containment in water can break down water filters. Typical Carbon filter types are pellets, strings, and blocks. PUR/Brita's are pellets and strings. These don't last as long as the block version. Even with carbon block type filters, there are still a matter of quality and these are certainly a top notch.

Update (Dec.,2012):

We probably have ran over 500 gallons on the original set of filters in about 10 months. The recommended filter change is one year or 650 gallons (auto shutoff is set at 650 Gallons). The flow is obviously not as strong as day one but still bearable. Keep in mind that PUR/Brita faucet version only lasts about 1 month in the same apartment.

We have had many under sink filter systems - this is the absolute best. Excellent flow rate easy install. Some difficulty getting the water connection tee properly threaded on the sink side of the water feed, but once that was accomplished all went well.

I bought this filter to replace my Clear20 pitcher. Happily, the twin solid block carbon filters do an excellent job of filtering my well water. Without filtration, my water has a noticeable mineral taste. My well is 181 feet deep. The Aqua-Pure makes it taste better than bottled water. Because the filters should last about 6 months, the cost per gallon is low.

In general, solid block carbon filters filter out more contaminants than regular "loose" filters like Brita filters. They also do a better filtering job than the whole house filters with the string wound filters.

Installation was quick and easy although the instructions were not as helpful as I would have liked. I mounted mine under my sink with the filters towards the front of the cupboard. That way, I have easy access to the filters. My system came with 2 sets of instructions, one manual for the filter and faucet and one for just the faucet. Each manual calls for a different size drill bit for boring a hole in the sink (if a pre-drilled hole is not available). I used a 1/2" bit. It worked perfectly.

The only knock against the Aqua-Pure, and it's a minor knock, is the water flow pressure. It's a little on the slow side. However, when one considers the water is passing through 2 blocks of carbon it really isn't that slow. If I am filling up a big pitcher or pot, I flip the faucet lever up so the faucet stays open. For filling drinking glasses, just a little bit of patience is required.
