10 stars actually, May 3, 2006
This review is from: Aqua Tank Desktop Aquarium - Current AQUABETTA SATIN NICKEL (Misc.)
First, to the person concerned about the fish boiling....that has to be inexperience talking. The light isn't in the water, nor does it get hot enough to be a problem. I have Bettas. I've had Bettas for over 30 years. I LOVE this set up, my Bettas love this set up, it's easy and it's attractive. I love my fish but not for $30 plus shipping so I went looking. I notice all the online prices are $29.99 so it's worth starting the car and burning the high priced gasoline to go out and buy this one. I bought these at a local aquarium shop for $19.00 each.

Very Attractive Betta Bowl, not a lamp, September 21, 2006
This review is from: Aqua Tank Desktop Aquarium - Current AQUABETTA SATIN NICKEL (Misc.)
Just received mine and it is a very attractive aquarium, the base is wide and sturdy and the arm and neck that hold the bowl aloft is beautifully curved. food holes are sufficiently large, and cover is good for bettas which have a tendency to jump.
This item is really more a Betta bowl then a lamp. The light element is tiny, smaller then a pencil eraser and puts out minimal heat(and light). The bowl itself is much larger then it seems in the picture, certainly much roomier then many of the glass bowls that are sold in pet stores for Bettas.
Calling this item a lamp is really misleading. Think of it as a suspended betta bowl that offers a unique and accesible view of your fish, with a tiny light that will cause the bowl to glow nicely. But you can't read with it.

Why do this to a creature?, June 5, 2008
This review is from: Aqua Tank Desktop Aquarium - Current AQUABETTA SATIN NICKEL (Misc.)
Bettas CAN survive in tiny amounts of water; but that's simply an adaptation to help them survive temporary drought conditions in nature. They normally don't choose or prefer to do so. Why in the world would anyone buy a beautiful fish and put it in a prison, basically?
I've kept bettas and assure everyone reading this that, if you put one in a minimum 20-gallon tank, it will reward you with lovely playful and active swimming displays, including changing color flashing to greet you and express it's moods. Bettas have tons of personality that you can't enjoy when they are cramped into a tiny bubble-like container. You are really missing out on what this pet has to offer if you don't treat it decently.
They are not fast swimmers but they will thoroughly use and enjoy a normal-sized tank. Because they are aggressive, do NOT mix them with anything besides catfish with protective barbs like corycats. The bettas will either do sneak attacks, taking chunks out of other fish; or, if the other fish are faster, those will nip and destroy the betta fins. Don't believe reports that they will live well with other fish. They might for a week or two; but sooner or later you'll have a problem.
If you don't like the idea of keeping one fish in a 20-gallon tank, consider that the idea is to make an "underwater garden" to enjoy, like you would a pond or a vase of flowers etc. With plants and decor etc., it is very relaxing and beautiful. Bettas really are unique and interesting fish and you will be happy with the results if you set up the aquarium compassionately!
