Deliciously Bent,
By Bruce Kendall "BEK" (Southern Pines, NC) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Volume One (DVD)
This is my current favorite DVD series. It's so absurd a premise and so beyond the pale of most cartoon series out there these days, that it has infinite appeal to both my sixteen year old son and to me. Our dynamic trio and their next door Jersey neighbor, the tank top wearing Carl, are the funniest toon characters in Television land. That's saying a lot as television is currently witnessing a true renaissance of cartoon humor. The creators are the same crew that brought us the equally silly, but cutting edge SPACEGHOST COAST TO COAST. The same sort of hip, off colour humor that informed that show is at play here, only more so. My favorite segment involves a manic depressive, deadbeat, suicidal doll who has a negative, lifeforce-draining impact on all who come in contact with him. Other highlights include a pair of aliens who look as if they've escaped from some crude '70s Atari game. The punk talking little alien, err, is particularly amusing. Of the three main characters, my favorite is Meatwad, the mush mouthed, single toothed meatball, whose speech is almost unintelligble, but who is delightfully, stupidly impressionable. If you're in the mood for some absolutely mindless, but hysterically hip comic relief, give this DVD set a try. The extras aren't that much to write home about, but no contemporary toon buff should be without this two disc set in his/her collection. If you have a sensibilty that is as warped as mine is, and you enjoy The Simpsons, South Park, Beavis and Butthead, The Family Guy, etc., I'm certain that you will enjoy this anti-superhero trio. BEK

Aqua Teen Hunger Force ('ATHF') is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Starring late on night on the Cartoon Network's 'Adult Swim', ATHF centers around a narcissistic milkshake, Master Shake, a genius batch of frenchfries with super powers, Frylock, and a sizzling ball of hamburger meat, Meatwad. The three form a detective agency/squad (The Aqua Teen Hunger Force, natch) and noisily "solve" mysterious events, much to the continued annoyance of their pot-bellied and 'self-employed' neighbor Carl. Sound bizarre? You have no idea. ATHF is some sort of sick, demented combination of Super Friends, South Park, and all those unintentionally creepy cartoons from the early 80s like The Snorks. Read: it rocks. This series is one of the most consistently entertaining, funny, and quotable I've ever seen. Each episode starts with some sort of bizarre creation or device either escaping from or otherwise being generated at the lab of Dr. Wierd in his castle on the New Jersey shore. Whatever that creation is, it inevitably ends up involving our heroes in very short order. The best episodes involve the Mooninites, a pair of pixelated freaks straight out of Moon Patrol or some other 1981 Atari game with mouths like children on South Park. The Mooninites descend from, naturally, the Moon, and proceed to wreak havoc with their kleptomania and ability to fire extremely slow, square video game bullets at people ("The bullet is enormous! Jumping..is useless.") A hilarious side plot involves the fixation of the Aqua Teen Hunger Force on the joys of basking in Carl's above-ground pool. In one classic moment, Carl puts up neon racing stripes around his pool: Carl: Yeah.. my pool looks like it's tearin' arse around the backyard..'cept it's standing still. Still waters run deep. In another episode, as Carl is blasted into the sky, his final lingering shriek is 'Stay out of my poooooool!' In short, this is a series that was clearly a blast for the animators to put together, and it's just as much fun to watch. I recommend it to anyone with even the faintest hint of appreciation for the absurd.

A Cartoon Treat...,

This review is from: Aqua Teen Hunger Force - Volume One (DVD)
No description of any kind would make someone take this show seriously, for it sounds infinitely silly and stupid, but in truth, it just works. "Aqua Teen Hunger Force" is, without a doubt, the funniest and most creative show on Cartoon Network`s "Adult Swim" cartooning block (a series of cartoon shows made for teenagers and adults that can take more risks than normal programming). It follows the misadventures of 3 six-foot-tall living foods: Master Shake, the leader of the Aqua Teens and a milkshake, Frylock, the rational one and a bunch of french fries, and Meatwad, a very... unintelligent wad of meat and the object of many a prank set up by Master Shake. They live next to Karl, an overweight man reliving the 80s who hates it when they use his pool. When they are not getting into situations on their own, they are battling anything out-of-the-ordinary, from a living, suicidal and depressed toy of Meatwads, to a juvenile rapper named "MC Pee Pants" to a pair of 2D aliens known as the Mooninites. A crazy and amazing show, this is a must see.Volume One (2 Disc set) contains: Pilot Episode: Season 1: Season 2: -"Mail Order Bride" Extras: Order (or Pre-Order) Today!

Whoever said that cartoons can only be intended for children never heard the likes of "Aqua Teen Hunger Force." In the spirit of shows such as The Simpsons or Family Guy, Aqua Teen Hunger Force offers whacky and bizarre humor that is both ridiculous and hilarious. It's an odd concept that sounds like it could be a complete disaster, but seeing that this was done by the right people, the show is absolutely terrific. "Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume 1" is a hilariously strange journey that is unlike any you have ever taken. There are three main characters in the show. There's Master Shake, Frylock and Meatwad. They all live together--despite the fact that they can get on each other's nerves very easily. The three are always confronted with strange situations and people. From aliens (one having a weird German accent) to gigantic robot bunnies; from a "cursing" mummy to greedy leprechauns; and from talking dolls to strange two-dimensional and birdie flipping creatures known as "Mooninites," these are only a few of the situations that the three supposed "crime fighters" face. The results are unpredictable and highly entertaining. This is a show that will be enjoyed by those with a warped sense of humor. It took a while for me to get into it all, but after a couple of episodes I was hooked and was laughing like crazy. The episodes are very short (each are about 10 minutes long), so it's easy to watch a whole bunch of them all at once. I always love bizarre and ridiculous humor, so this show was perfect for me. I think it has a great concept, very entertaining characters and a very solid direction. While this is indeed a cartoon, it's really not intended for young children. It is a part of Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim," and for good reason. It's nowhere near as bad as South Park or even Family Guy, but the show does contain mild language and adult content/situations. Teens and up shouldn't have any problems with the show, as I'm sure they have seen worse, but it isn't a show for very little children. Besides, they wouldn't appreciate the off-beat humor. There's not a lot of extras on the DVD. The package consists of two discs that has 16 episodes. Audio and picture quality is very good, considering it is a cartoon. Extras that are included are commentaries on the episodes "Rabbot (the original cut)," "Space Conflict from Beyond Pluto," and "Mayhem of the Mooninites." Other extras are never before seen footage, the original cut of the pilot, "Rabbot," and a few "hidden" goodies. Not a lot of extras, but still a decent package overall. "Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Volume 1" is a great time that delivers very off-the-wall humor around every corner. There isn't another show like it, in my opinion. It may take a few episodes to really get into it all, but soon enough you're hooked and are laughing all the way. If you like cartoons that aren't your ordinary squeaky-clean family entertainment, then this is something you should definitely consider checking out. This is something I will be watching again and again. I can't wait to get Volume 2. If you like this, then I also highly recommend "Invader Zim," since it has the same dark and twisted humor in it. You're bound to enjoy it if you like this, and vice versa. -Michael Crane

As much as I enjoy 'South Park', 'The Family Guy' and 'The Simpsons'...there is no animated show, nay, there is no show period as funny as 'ATHF'! The 15 minutes a week it is on justifies owning a television! Finally, the DVD.

Aqua Teen Hunger Force Volume One: High Art reflecting reality.
First off, Amazon and my fellow reviewers of this DVD fail to mention is that Aqua Teen is not written for, or intended for children. More so, children under 12 most likely find it un-relatable or/and hard to follow (a.k.a. stupid) simply because ATHF format does not follow any of today's typical format for children cartoon shows. It is however, one of anchor productions of Cartoon Network's [adult swim] late night viewing lineup and for several good reasons. ATHF clearly qualifies as 21st Century High Art because like all great art, it offers commentary on various emotions that are prevalent in today's American Society. This cartoon's own rocky history in development probably contributed to its true beauty. Aqua Teen Hunger Force appears at first glance to be some kind of Superhero recast of more typical cartoons. This however is obviously a facade create primarily to appease Cartoon Network's top executives in order to secure financing of the cartoon as admitted by the producers. Chris Willis and Matt Maiellaro, in an interview on the DVD, tell us, "well, we just could not go to the big bosses and say that we want to make a cartoon were these characters just sit around and stuff happens." However, that is exactly what Chris and Matt intended to do. Additionally, they also have brought back the 11 minute format of the Bugs Bunny, Popeye, Loonie toons tradition. The first few episodes you will see on this DVD from its early production will clearly have signs of the network's mandated framework paradigm for all cartoons. However, Superheroes being who they are, the Hunger Force soon makes quick work of smashing those paradigms into little pieces. Chris Willis explains it this way, "The sell pitch for this show is, Dr. Weird invents some creepy monster, it escapes and reeks havoc on the town, and the ATHF stop the monster each week and save the day." Yes, the show does feature a Dr. Weird, who does invent some creepy thing each episode, but the ATHF could really care less, though sub-textually, they know they really should be hunting the monster. The fact of the matter is, the ATHF just want to be left alone to do "whatever" (drink beer, watch TV, play on the internet, swim in the pool, etc...) except, they are technically "Detectives" and should be out detecting, if for no other reason other than to pay the rent. Three Stooges comes to mind however, the huge difference between the Three Stooges and ATHF, is the Stooges plots always had the characters showing a true willingness to succeed at their endeavors, ATHF has no interest in achieving anything except for their own personal relaxation and tranquility. As you watch the DVD episode progression, you will see how the writers start in a sort of probationary period, but soon leave the orbit of typical cartoon paradigm and venture off in many different directions. Though the cartoons are truly funny own their own merits, the saga behind the cartoon, makes them that much more interesting and entertaining.

ATHF is an adult cartoon, definitely not for the kiddies, and certainly not for everyone. The humor is ridiculous and often rude, but left me bent over in stitches with my cheeks soaked from tears of laughter. It's so offbeat that it's cool. With fast food as the main characters, a Shake (Master Shake), French Fries (Frylock), and a wad of hamburger (Meatwad) you should realize from the beginning that this is no ordinary cartoon. Meatwad is the dumb one, Frylock the smart one, and Shake the acerbic, sarcastic one. Aside from saving the world, they spend most of their time in their neighbor Carl's backyard, aboveground pool.
Neighbor Carl an uneducated, sloppy fat, hairy, Jersey-speaking guy who wears a sleeveless tank top, sweats, and flip-flops. Stir in monstrous foes such as leprechauns (Flargon and Dingle), a robot rabbit, a half-man/half-moth named Mothmosterman, Brownie Monsters, the Mooninites (Ignignot and Err - who look like 1980's video game squares), a diaper-wearing spider, a mummy, a doll with a bad attitude, and you have one bizarro cartoon. Each show is prologued by a short scene of Dr. Weird (check out the outfit!) and his assistant Steve. The prologues have nothing to do with the show, but are hilarious. The humor is crude, rude, and off-color, but remains intelligent enough for some very unique laughs. DISC ONE: 1) Rabbot - A giant robot rabbit terrorizes the town. 2) Escape From Leprechaupolis - Flargon and Dingle try to steal gold with their rainbow machine and a laptop. 3) Bus Of The Undead - Mothmonsterman is attracted to Shake's Light-Hat, Shake dumps brownies into Frylocks DNA machine along with Mothmonsterman's saliva and produces the Brownie Monsters. "I laid a thousand of my eggs in his esophagus. I need to propagate my species, and he's being a baby about it." 4) Mayhem Of The Mooninites - Ignignot and Err come to earth and use Meatwad to steal things for them. 5) Balloonenstein - Meatwad has static electricity powers and torments Shake with them. 6) Space Conflict From Beyond Pluto - Introducing the spiky Plutonians, a tall green one named Emory and a short yellow one with a German accent. 7) Ol'Drippy - Drippy the polite fungus monster arises from the mess left in the kitchen. -- Extras include the original Rabbot, Commentaries, and some extra footage. DISC TWO: 1) Revenge Of The Mooninites - Ignignot and Err are back. 2) MC Pee Pants - Meatwad's favorite rapper turns out to be an insane spider that wears a diaper. 3) Circus - Randy The Astonishing, a blobbish, trenchcoat-wearing worm-thing buys Meatwad from Shake to use in the circus. 4) Dumber Days - Meatwad uses his brain, which is removable. 5) Love Mummy - (My favorite episode!) The ATHF finds a mummy in their basement. (Curse! Curse! Hug! Hug! Lobster! Steak! Overdone! Bored! No, Not Cool!) The mummy curses them unless they feed him and spend money on him. 6) Dumber Dolls - (My second favorite!) Frylock buys Meatwad the Happy Time Harry Doll, who comes with a switchblade instead of a right hand. He wears red glitter shoes and boxer shorts, has a handful of unpaid bills, and vomits up booze. 7) Interfection - Shake gets on Frylock's computer and infects the entire house with pop-ups. (Those perpetrators will pay! I will redden their buttocks!) 8) Bad Replicant - We briefly see Dr. Weird's leopard briefs. The Plutonians are back. This time they create a clone of Shake to "De-terraform" earth. 9) PDA - Shake loses his PDA, and the blue alien Rolulox shows up with all kinds of modern devices. Aqua Teen Hunger Force is from the Adult Swim program from Cartoon Network. If you like cartoons such as Family Guy, Futurama, South Park, or Invader Zim, them you should get a big kick out of ATHF. The only thing I do not like about this show is that the intro music is a little annoying, but the cartoon itself is well worth it. Enjoy!

This is a show about Frylock, Meatwad, and Master Shake who live somewhere near the Jersey Shore. Carl there neighbor always get mad with what they do. He has a swimming pool which Frylock, Master Shake, and Meatwad swim in. Master Shake acts like he owns the swiming pool though. The three face mostly robots and aliens in every episode. In Voume One there are 16 episodes about 12 minutes long each which are all hilarious. I can't stop laughing when watching this. There are not that many special features though on the dvd but the show itself is alone worth the price. DISC ONE Special features: SECRETS: 2. Go to special features menu and click on commentaries, go down and press left to see Meatwad's igloo light up. Press enter. DISC TWO Special Features: SECRETS: I can't wait for season 2. It will be released on July 20, 2004.
