For Crystal Clear Water,
This review is from: AquaClear 110 Aquarium Power Filter - for 60 to 110 Gallon (Misc.)
I set up the Aqua Clear in water that was yellow and pretty cloudy. The Aqua Clear clear cleaned the water and diminished the yellow tint within a day. I was being told by my local pet store that the Fluval filter was the best filter for my turtles. Even with cloudy yellow water, my local pet store said it was natural and fine. It wasn't so fine with me. I could hardly see my turtles and had to change the filters every two weeks and use a turkey baster every day to pick up larger debris which that filter couldn't handle. Now I have very happy turtles that are enjoying the water more and getting out of their shells, I'll let my turtles speak for themselves.

I received this filter when I acquired a 125 gallon freshwater tank. They had two on the system.
I purchased new carbon bags and rinsed the filters and sponges and it is the BEST filter I have ever had, and that's a lot of filters. I usually use biowheels, which are wonderful but they are splashy and loud. The Aquaclears are not loud plus have an adjustable flow which is a HUGE benefit alone. They are perfect as you can add media just like you could a canister filter, as it has a media basket instead of cartridges. It's really brilliant! I will certainly be purchasing the smaller versions for my future tanks, the rest are set up w/ biowheels. My hospital tank will be sporting a new aquaclear very soon as it's in the bedroom and these filters are very quiet. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!

This review is from: AquaClear 110 Aquarium Power Filter - for 60 to 110 Gallon (Misc.)
i've had this filter for over 5 years now, running continuously obviously (minus the times i've cleaned it). it has not once broken down, or gotten clogged. the water is always very clear, and i do not have to clean the filter or water very often (i only do it every couple of months).

This filter works. It's very powerful and moves A LOT of water. Great biological filtration with the sponge that lasts forever. Easy to manage. It's NOT super quiet. Probably because it's for a 100 gallon tank. My Aqua-tech is super quiet, but it doesn't have a fraction of power this one has. You are going to hear a whirrrr but ALL POWERFUL PUMPS ARE LIKE THAT--this one however, IS quieter than Penguin biowheels. I don't like bio wheels because the bacteria die when they dry out which is easy to do especially when cleaning. Penguins are very hard to clean. These Aqua Clears are simple as pie to clean.
When my fish tank is fully established with plenty of bacteria I do not use charcoal as a rule. I only use charcoal (1) When the fish tank is new; (2) I had to terminally clean the tank (change all the water and really clean it; (3) deliberately remove chemicals. Once the tank is fully established I use those easy to cut flosses that can fit into any pump and remove the charcoal. That's just my choice. And of course I keep a close eye on the water (check ammonia, etc)

This filter is a wonderful 3 part filter. You get the mechanical, biological and chemical filtering all in one easy to use, easy to maintain filter. It does take about 4" clearance from back of tank to wall. So measure! I like the big sponge and the idea that the water has to start at the bottom and then go up through all the media, before going into the tank. Also, for leveling, you can use a piece of 3/4 inch tubing between the body of the filter and the aquarium, to make it level. I found that this works very well and stays in place. Just a helpful hint! LOL When I get the courage to move my 55g tank away from the wall a little more, I am going to get another 110.

AquaClear Filters are the best,

I use AquaClear filters on all my tanks from the larger 75 gallon, down to the smallest hospital tank. They are best hang-on-back filters you can buy, in my opinion.
The best part of these filters is their versatility. You can use the foam, carbon, and biomax media built for the filter, and you can also add your own media bags and filter media (even from other manufacturers) to make this a truly versatile filter. Plus, they move a lot of water for excellent filtration, they're easy to maintain, and relatively quiet.

best filter you can buy aside from canisters. I love this filter. It is very quiet, easy to set up. It works great. I don't have to clean my aquarium as often now.

I own a 55 gallon aquarium housing 2 large African Clawed Frogs, 1 large Kenyan Clawed Frog, 2 small red belly Pacu, 1 small Pleco, 1 guppy that grew to big for the frogs to eat and 3 apple snails. This filter is easy to take care of, easy to clean and does an outstanding job of filtering my tanks water despite the fact that it is overstocked. The filter came with a mechanical sponge filter, an activated carbon filter and ceramic rings for biological filtering.
After 6 months I removed the ceramic rings and replaced them with nanoballs I found here on amazon. I also quit using the activated charcoal as most of the aquarists I have spoken to have said it to be not necessary. There is a switch where you can adjust the flow of the filtration. I cant notice a difference whether I have this turned all the way up or all the way down. Maybe it's just me as everyone else seems to love this feature. I have no regrets about purchasing this filter. I know some people are big proponents of the biowheels. I'm no expert and for all I know the biowheels may be better but I do know that my ammonia levels with the aquaclear are always safe.

I have three of these filters on 2 of my fish tanks, One cleaning a 75 and keeping it super clean, easy to change filters and clean. Two on my 120 keeping it super clean and i have sand as the bottom in that one, The only problem i have is they can break easy if droped ( had one break but was fixed with tape duct tape does wonders ) I def recommand these filters i have numerous other filters and these are quieter and clean better

A great workhorse for freshwater tanks,

I use my AquaClear 110 as an addendum filter for my 150 gallon freshwater tank. It is used in combo with another Hagen product the Fluval 405 External Canister Filter. I use the AquaClear 110 primarily to aerate my tank as the Fluval canister filter isn't especially good at breaking my aquarium water's surface.
First the good, the AquaClear 110 is very simple to operate as well as disassemble and reassemble. It has a great variable flow rate and moves a lot of water, which my fish appreciate. The AquaClear filter media is easy to use, though I don't use carbon or zeolite, I just use two sponges. AquaClear filters also seem to last for years before any part replacements need to be made. They are real workhorses. There are drawbacks to this unit. The box filter's cover tends to rattle and can be noisy. This can be easily remedied by removing the cover or putting something with a little weight on top of it. I place my fish's food and mixing cup on top of my cover and it seemed to do the trick. Though AquaClear's pre-bagged media is easy to use, it is a little expensive. But the filter easily accommodates homemade media bags. Also, in my opinion, this unit is not a good stand alone filter for saltwater and high salt brackish tanks. It should only be used to aerate or create water flow for these types of aquariums. But overall, the AquaClear 110 is a very good filter that works great as a stand alone filter for freshwater tanks and is an excellent additional filter for saltwater, brackish and freshwater tanks. |
