The impeller in an aquarium filter does a remarkable job of moving thousands of gallons of water each day. The fact that they can operate for several years before needing to be replaced is a testament to their overall construction.

The Aquaclear series of filters utilize a magnetic impeller assembly with the plastic fan attached to the top of the unit.

The Aquaclear 20, 30, 50 and 70 all use the same electric motor and magnetic impeller assembly, the only difference being that the fan attachment for each subsequent filter is slightly larger than its smaller sibling, thus
allowing the next size up Aquaclear to pass a greater number of gallons of water per hour.

This also gives you some flexiblity in how these filters can be used. For instance, suppose you would like to be able to increase the amount of time between filter cleanings, while maintaining the same water flow that you have with an Aquaclear 50.

You can purchase an Aquaclear 70 and swap out its impeller for the one in the Aquaclear 50. This way you have a greater filter surface area, without increasing the turbulence of your aquarium's water.

The Aquaclear filters do have an adjustable water flow, however, even at the lowest level, an Aquaclear 70 would be too powerful for say a 10 gallon aquarium.

However, with the impeller blade from an Aquaclear 30, installed in an Aquaclear 70, you get the advantage of far greater filter area than the 30, which leads to less frequent cleanings, and you won't have to worry about your fish having to fight the current of the Aquaclear 70's larger impeller fan.

Later on, should you decide to move up to a larger sized aquarium, you can then install the impeller that your Aquaclear 70 came with.

I don't know what you could really say bad about it, My AquaClear 50 came with a broken impeller so I bought this to replace it. A cool thing I learned was that you can interchange these impellers so you could put an AquaClear 20 impeller inside a AquaClear 70 filter so you have a flower flow. Why would you do this? More Bio Media, More Filter Media and so on!
If you are new to tanks you will soon realize you can never have too much filter, if you buy say a AquaClear 20 you will soon find yourself buying a second one so save yourself some time and money and buy the biggest filter you can fit then change the impeller to suit your needs.

I own and operate three aquaclear 70s on my aquariums. These filters offer the best in terms of value, quality, and function.

The impeller can, however, wear down with use. In my case, four years of solid operation before I started hearing progressively worse rattling from the unit. Removing the impeller i saw striations and scratches in the magnetic portion. This is due to pieces of gravel or more specifically abrasive sand wearing it down. Often after a water change a lot of sediment can get sucked into the filter and housing. This sand causes the motor to make the magnet vibrate off its axis creating noise.

I purchased this replacement and dropped it in after a quick clean of the chamber. Started it up and it was silent! Problem solved.

Another option to solve a loud filter is to use Vaseline on the impeller and housing. Be sure it is fish safe first, but the lubrication can and does help. Otherwise I would advise just buying this replacement part.

Bought this as a spare for my AquaClear 50. Inspecting the impeller shows no signs of damage from shipping or from the manufacturing process. When it comes time to replace my current impeller, from damage or wear, this will allow for quick replacement.

Like the original impeller, this may take a few weeks to break-in and runs smoothly.

Just what I needed to make my filter quiet again. If you have a noisy filter it is probably the impeller.Mine was 5 years old at least ,so it was just worn out. Check to make sure the shaft is not bent as you have to order the shaft as it is not included. Very seldom is the shaft needed (i didn't) but just so you are aware of this. Works perfectly.

Then this is probably all you will have to change. I've swapped two used impellers out with these new ones, and my aquaclears are back to their old, quiet selves.

I keep a couple of extras of these because I use my AQ filters for a Salt water macro algae tank and it really abuses the filter with sand and plant matter being sucked up from time to time. I clean out the impellers bi-weekly and like to keep one or two spares just in case I break a couple of the blades, which i seem to do more often then I would like to admit!

I bought the impeller for my AquaClear filter because my impeller broke for some reason. Everybody was telling me to buy a new motor for this filter which I really did not need it so I did my research and find impeller on amazon.com and took my chance and it was the good decision. Thanks,go for this product quality is great.
