This review will fit a number of the current EBooks on Aquaponics.
I have recently been reviewing Aquaponics books and EBooks on Barnes & Noble and Amazon and frankly, I have been wading through an awful lot of garbage lately.
I am a retired professional and do NOT profess to be and never have been an expert but I do know a great deal and have professional skills in many different technologies. ( X=unknown factor spurt=drip of water under pressure ... x-spurt= unknown drip under pressure )
I was at the forefront of this developing technology and even had input on some of the technology. I have recently returned to it, to build my own Aquaponics System, which has more to do with what is happening around the world with food production, water usage in regular gardening / farming practice, GMO's and politics.
I have many years of experience with Hydroponics and Aquaponics, as well as many other skills and professions. I visited this writer's page to see if I could find any information about his experience and there isn't any but he has even written a book on Beekeeping. I am very suspicious of those who write as though they are qualified enough to be paid for their knowledge. I am also a Hobby Bee Rancher and I have spent eight years working with Bees. I have taught many people how to work with Bees but that doesn't make me qualified to write a book and charge for it. There are other people out there with far more experience who have written many books about Beekeeping. I know, because I have the best of them all in my library. If you check out this writers information page, you will see a wide variety of subjects, which I find disturbing. Something I learned at an early age ..... " Jack of All Trades, Skilled at None ".
There is an inherent danger to reading many of these EBook publications because too many people take that information as being the gospel truth. The fact is that many of these publications are written by " Shade Tree Mechanics " and educated people do not let Shade Tree Mechanics work on their vehicles, and the same should go for many of these EBooks.
I think this is one of those writers who found one of those Ads that claimed to " Teach you how to make money writing instructional pamphlets " and he got hooked. I'll continue to purchase my material from the professionals instead of the " Jack of All Trades and Instructional pamphlets " guy, because he is only in it for the money. Besides, I agree with the first reviewer and the possibility of plagiarism with this publication does exist. Plagiarism has been running rampant through a great number of these Aquaponic EBooks. One plagiarized book is one too many and I've already read enough.
I read the sample of his book and here are the issues that tell me this writer knows Squat Nothing ! First, Aquaponics is a Freshwater Technology. The Amazon cover is NOT the real book cover. The fish on the cover of his EBook is a " Clown Fish " which is a very popular Saltwater fish, that normally has a symbiotic relationship with Sea Anemones. He states that water from the Fish Tank flows by gravity to the grow beds and this is incorrect. Water is pumped first into a settling tank to remove the solid waste from the fish and uneaten food, which is then pumped out to the grow beds, which use gravity flow. His next incorrect statement is that you can use Saltwater for Aquaponics but here again, Aquaponics is a Freshwater Technology. I know of no variety of edible plants other than Kelp / Seaweed, which grows in saltwater. The problem with his statement about growing in saltwater is that saltwater environments are difficult to control, due to the environment. The water chemistry is super-critical and after making a statement like that about being able to grow a Saltwater Aquaponic system I would have to say " Prove It " ! The whole subject matter of Aquaponics is having a system that is virtually hands-off after the system is up and running. This writer is so far off base and if you are willing to waste your money on his books, you get what you deserve.
My college Major was Freshwater and Saltwater Fish Farming / Marine Science. To insure that you understand the Technology I will provide the following definitions of the technologies; Freshwater Farming is called Aquaculture and Saltwater Farming is called Mariculture and growing plants in a soilless media is called Hydroponics. Much of the original Aquaculture projects were about raising Catfish, Tilapia, Trout, and Freshwater Prawns. For those who have been misinformed or do not know this; Shrimp are a Saltwater Crustacean and Prawns are a Freshwater Crustacean. The restraunt and seafood industry have incorrectly used the name " Prawn " for every medium or large Shrimp as a marketing tool and they are wrong. A Prawn is on average four to five times the size of its Shrimp cousin.
I challenge this writer about his qualifications and personal knowledge of Aquaponics. This writer is clueless and I recommend you look elsewhere for your book. His writing shows that he is one of those people who never learned how to use his word processing software and his writing is of such poor quality it gives support to the claim of plagiarism made by the first reviewer.
I will move along with my review to help those who know very little about Aquaponics and some of the other issues connected to the EBooks.
In the 80's we called this technology Aquaculture ... Then in the 90's, early 2k, people combined the two technologies of Aquaculture and Hydroponics, and now we have Aquaponics. Just so you are aware of the power of Aquaponics, modified Aquaponics on a large commercial scale has been used to treat city sewage wastewater ... it can be accomplished, just do not try it at home because it could be a dangerous health risk if not done correctly.
Regarding EBooks / Electronic Book format, there are people out there trying to make a fast $ Buck $ from your thirst of information and your ignorance of Aquaponics technology. People are plagiarizing other author's hard work and going as far as trying to rewrite them in an attempt to hide their plagiarism. They are stealing " Book Covers " or using book covers that do not represent their books, just to make their plagiarized works look official and I have discovered a number of these books in EBook format.
Many of these EBooks read as if a teenager learning how to write a book report wrote them. In other words, many of these books are garbage, plain infantile garbage. I'll allow you to be the judge of that but his book is not an $8.00 book. It is more like a .50 cent pamphlet.
The EBook is a whole new venture to save on paper usage and paper waste and that is a great idea but I have issues with it because you cannot walk into a bookstore and preview the EBook you want without paying for it first. With the EBook, you do not get much of a preview of the writer or the books content, sometimes there are enough words in the sample to give you an idea about the writer and the quality of their writing. With a paperback or hard cover book, you can at least skim through it and read part of it before you buy it and it is easier to get your money back if you do not find what you want; you just simply return the book.
All I can say is be careful, be aware and persevere, and most importantly, if you have discovered that a book has been plagiarized, notify the seller immediately and ask them to have it reviewed for removal from the book list. Provide the titles of the other book(s) you used to make that claim. Ask for a refund, but be polite and if the seller refuses, just contact your bank card company right away and tell them, so they can get you your money back.
Regarding Aquaponics, there is a plethora of excellent information on the Internet for free, if you are willing to do the research and spend the time looking around. You will save yourself money and many problems, especially if it was an EBook.
There are good writers out there and some sell books on Aquaponics for a fair price, but be aware of the " High-Price-Spread ". Some authors are " legends in their own minds " and are asking far more money than the books are worth, so let the price be your guide, you get exactly what you pay for.
As for Aquaponics, it is the future of safe food production because you control what you grow and what you harvest, and all of this can be accomplished in almost every backyard around the world. It only depends upon how much room you can spare, how much money you can afford to spend, and how much time you are willing to put into learning about Aquaponics technology.
Some of these EBook writers are over simplifying the subject matter making people believe they are going to supply their family with food, using a few aquariums and other materials to grow their food and that is not going to work unless you like eating goldfish. You might grow a few strawberry plants and a few heads of lettuce but that is about it.
A real Aquaponics system starts out using equipment on a larger scale ( modified 55 gal. plastic drums, stock tanks, hydroponics equipment ... ) which will either be built in a small greenhouse or other structure. The fish are much larger ( if you are going to eat them ) and you are growing many different varieties of vegetables, berries and other types of plants, all grown in a soilless media, the type used in Hydroponics. Growth rates for plants and fish are usually accelerated in an Aquaponics system.
Much of what you can grow depends on what region of the planet you live, the seasonal temperatures, the rate of growth of a specific species, and the type of animal(s) you choose. I have overly simplified this information to help you here but it is not a difficult technology to learn.
In Australia, backyard Aquaponics is All The Rage ! ... It is the number one gardening program down under.
As I mentioned before, most of the information is on the Internet for free but there are some publications which you will have to pay for, which will help you to " iron out the kinks ". It never hurts to have a small library of books on hand for a specific topic of your interest ( I guess that's why I have such a huge library ). A good book is always a resource and if you are experiencing a problem with some aspect of your interest, just grab your book and read. There are plenty of PDF files related to Aquaponics, which you can download and they could also provide you with a great deal of quality information and ideas.
Just please don't make a " Stupid Review " telling everyone that so and so's book was " fantastic and covered every subject so well ", about any poorly written publication, be it an EBook or a printed book. It really annoys those who appreciate a quality publication and it is very misleading to others who need quality educational materials.
BTW, there are a number of books on Aquaponics, which are only printed ... after you pay for them. I have not purchased any of these books and I have no plans to do so, only because you cannot return the book if it is " junk or garbage " and you cannot get a refund. As they say, " BBA ... or Buyer Be Aware ". I am not saying that these books are junk but I am very suspicious of books sold this way and I do not like wasting my money or giving it away.
Another clue I use with these " cheap ? EBooks " is that you can tell the quality of most by the spelling, the grammar, and sentence structure mistakes.
Too many people buy expensive computers and then buy an expensive software package with a word processor and leave it at that. They seem to think that now that they have a word processing package that they are the new Mark Twain or someone like that. They don't bother to properly set the options in the word processing software before they use it to write these books ( books in general ) and it shows every time. Even the " Free " word processing software has setting options that need to be set before using. But in the end you can end up with books, which are barely fit to be liners for a bird cage, all because someone never learned how to write in the first place. ( refer to legends in their own minds ) This only makes the money one spends on these books that much worse. Reading these poorly spelled, poorly worded, poorly written books gives me headaches.
With a little " Internet legwork " you can find most of this information for free.
If you are going to build your own backyard Aquaponics system for yourself or your family, do not be a cheap-skate. Buy good used equipment or new equipment and build it right the first time. You will avoid the many problems that arise later from using cheap junk because you were cutting corners and trying to save money. If you use junk, you will only end up spending far more money than you planned just to make repairs.
So I will finish this with; Be Aware, Be Very Aware ... of ... " specialty EBooks ".Read more ›
Admittedly i have done quite a bit of my own research on the topic of aquaponics and i already knew more than this book discuses. I only read this book because it was free. I would be pretty upset if i paid even just a couple of dollars for this. I read the book in maybe a little over an hours time, and i'm a pretty slow reader and it seems to be short even for the supposed "78 print pages" of the online description. To me it seems like the author had been trolling some aquaponic discussion boards just to slap together an e-book for a little easy cash. Perhaps for someone who has no knowledge of aquaponics this may be a good intro, but in my opinion none of the topics discussed are brought to an effective conclusion. Most statements are made without qualification or definition and will force the reader to go elsewhere just to realize what this person is talking about. Also there are many details not even considered to the point that, should the reader decide to go ahead and build a system, s/he will soon find problems to which this book will offer no solutions and waste time and money having to build and re-build. Two stars is being a little generous. Bottom line is that, i could write a better booklet than this though i have never written a book and have yet to build my own aquaponics system. If you want a single source for aquaponics understanding i HIGHLY recommend Murray Hallam. His "Aquaponics DIY/First 12 Months" gives all the information one will need to design/build the most efficient, cost-effective food production system available and "Aquaponics Secrets" answers all the questions you didn't even know to ask and further enables you to avoid future problems. Whether you just want a personal organic food system or are considering a commercial production plant, Murray Hallam has been designing, researching and building both for decades and ,in my opinion, is the PRIME authority at this time. Unfortunately for Amazon they don't yet offer his material(you'll have to Google his name).Read more ›
Thank you for dropping by and considering buying one of our eBooks. Several years ago a friend of mine mentioned I should put together all of our real estate experience into information products to spread the wealth of knowledge we gained over the years. To that end we've decided to not only start to capture the real estate knowledge we've gained but to also provide basic information on a variety of topics. What you'll see over the next few years is my passion for knowledge and exploration put into written form on a variety of interesting topics ranging from How to Build an Aquaponics Garden, Beekeeping to How to Stage a House.
