A coated, single ply medium weight drumhead. The American Vintage™ series has a slightly larger hoop diameter to allow for an easy fit on most vintage drumshells. This drumhead features a special coating that has the look, feel and warm sound of a calfskin head.

This is not my preferred choice as a drum head, but for many vintage snare drums this is the only head that will fit.

The reason is the circa 1900s-1930s and even later snare drums were made slightly oversized by today's sizing standards. For example, the vintage 14" diameter drums were really 14" whereas modern snare drums cited as 14" are really 13.85. Do note, however, that most metal snare drums from the same vintage eras will take just about any modern heads. There are exceptions, so measure carefully before you make a purchase decision.

Also note that Gretsch round badge drums - even the later ones - are notorious for too tight fit on most modern heads. This model, though, will rectify that problem. And a final caveat: some very early snare drums from the late 1800s through the early 1900s were such odd sizes that the only solution is to salvage the flesh hoops and have calf heads tucked onto them.

There is a lot to like about this head. The slightly yellowed vintage surface is a nice touch. The texture is beautiful for brushwork. And, of course, the fact that it allows you to play a vintage snare drum that would otherwise be sitting in a display because of heads is the best thing to like. However, to my ears this head has a plastic-like sound when played with sticks. Bear in mind that is the way I personally hear it, and you may not have the same impression. Also, in a live playing situation that sound disappears into the mix.

Bottom line: if you have a vintage snare drum that other heads don't fit, this one may work. It has for me on a number of snare drums with manufacture dates spanning over 100 years.

This is a wonderful drumhead. I have been sold on Aquarian heads for several years and now I'm happy to discover these 'vintage' style heads. Wonderful, warm sound with a nice sustain. I use them on my old Ludwig kit. The heads match up nicely with the old six ply mahogany shells.

The Vintage Aquarian heads have a coating that lasts far longer than other brands. They sound fantastic and seemingly last forever. The tune up easily and sound great on toms and snares. Great for jazz, vinatge rock, and other styles. My first choice among all drum heads available.
