The Sun Rises and Falls on These Amazing EDGE Aquarium Lighting Fixtures

Now with built-in battery backup for all Timer functions! The revolutionary, feature-rich EDGE LED Fixtures from Aquatic Life are a game changer in the realm of outdated, overcomplicated LED lighting systems presently available. These sleek, low-profile fixtures measure only 0. 5 inches high and 4 inches wide, and were designed to enhance life inside the aquatic environment, while being almost invisible over your tank. The ultra-slim design coupled with state of the art LED technology ensures maximum light output is focused inside the aquarium, while five colors of 120-degree dispersion, 0. 5W Watt LED’s ensure a full-spectrum of light needed by all the tank’s inhabitants. Aquatic Life EDGE LED Fixtures Introduce Advanced Features to Both the Novice and Expert Aquarist: The new Sunrise + Sunset Functions enable the LED’s to be easily programmed to slowly turn on or off in 10 minute increments over a two-hour period of time, thereby creating a variety of different Sunrise and Sunset effects. The Aquatic Life EDGE LED Fixtures feature a new, simple-to-use 3-Channel Timer that allows completely independent control of the Bright White, Mixed Color and Moonlight LED’s, creating lighting that replicates underwater daytime sunlight, and sunrise/sunset effects, and the shimmering blue glow of Moonlight. All three sizes were designed to provide the absolute maximum light output possible, while avoiding any heating of the aquatic environment. The adjustable width aquarium frame mounts with extendable arms safely support and position the fixture above any tank size.

I had wanted to replace my Aquatic Life T5 48" dual bulb (54 w each, one actinic, one daylight) with an LED canopy, to reduce power consumption and to reduce heat transfer into tank. The house does not have air conditioning, unnecessary in coastal Southern California, but the T5 fixture ran rather hot, and when the house got warm in late summer, tank temp was pushing 82 F. Bear in mind there are also three power heads (two skimmers, one water circulator), all three are MaxiJet 1200s, and these add heat to the water as well. I do not have any live coral.

Having already had an excellent experience with my first Aquatic Life T5 canopy, I again chose Aquatic Life for my first LED canopy. Customer service has been superb in the past, and I knew they offered limited lifetime (labor) warranties.

I've had the EDGE LED canopy running three days, here is a description of the aquarium set-up and first impressions.

Set-up: 90 gallon FOWLR (fish only, live rock with inverts/snails/shrimp/crabs) tank. Two 8" fish: blueface angel and clown/lineatus tang, both are 26 years old, purchased as babies in 1988. New set up because old tank sprang a leak. Re-used live rock and substrate of course. Coralline algae slowly spreading over live rock frags. Ammonia, nitrates, nitrates all zero; phosphates run 0-0.25, but I use tap water and Instant Ocean rather than R.O. It's possible that the trace phosphates in the tap water are inhibiting the coralline algae and/or encouraging green hair algae; there are patches of green hair here and there that the snails ignore. May not be high tech but you can't argue with 26 year-old fish.

Pro's:

1. Reduced power consumption. Program 1 operates the colored lights (red, blue), of which there are 20 @ 0.

I was relative new to aquatic lighting, but after doing some due diligence on my part I decided to try this Aquatic Life Edge light. They are one brand that you should seriously consider. I soon found out that Aquatic Life has an excellent reputation for customer support. They stand by their products and only charge for parts and shipping if your unit ever needs serviced. The other brands of led lighting either were too expensive for me or had too low of quality for me to consider for my 40 gallon freshwater tank.

After purchasing this Edge light fixture by Aquatic life, I noticed a couple things right away. First, the directions for programming the unit were lacking, but at least I found it fairly straight forward to program the timing of the light sequences. There are youtube videos online that are also very helpful.

Second, the leds in this are red, blue, and white. These colors separate out the sides and back of the aquarium when on simultaneously. Its a little distracting, but if you have just one of the colors on at a time, its not a problem. I have seen this kind of effect from several led lights in the past so its just an effect of leds themselves and not unique to this fixture. The color temperatures from this light fixture are more ideal for freshwater and so is the light output. Can you grow coral with this light and use for saltwater tanks?? Probably yes, but if your tank is really deep (greater than 18" deep) it maybe not the best idea. They are half a watt (.5) leds instead of the higher 1 or 3 watt leds. Lumen or light output is less per led, but the manufacturer puts more leds inside so lumen output is still pretty good.

I have had this light for a bit now. The timer function is nice and the light is ok however the light spectrum is not as strong as you would think. I ended up using my old exotec lite I had for my old 25g and modifying it to fit a 75g. So I now run 2 lights and now its up to the job of growing corals. If I knew what I know now I would not have gotten this light.
However it is a nice light. One thing to remember is that if you have corals you will need from 2 to 4.5 watts per LED per standard US gallon or just per gallon.
It is what it is.

Update 5/23/2015
The light just stopped working. So I do not know what to say. I am not happy right now, spent nearly $200.00 and now it's junk. Contacted the seller and have not had anyone contact me back.

Another update 5/28/2015
I have called the company 3 times no answer, right off to voice mail. Left a voice mail and nothing, emailed them several times no answers. Stay away from this seller they do not answer email or phone calls.

The only tank that this light would fit on for me was my 55 gallon mixed reef tank, currently running on some inherited EcoTechs. Most light set ups for the reef aquarium tend to stay more towards the bluish lights like those found in the actinic fluorescent bulbs, and the redder "amazon" lights usually reserved for freshwater or planted aquariums. The spectral analysis provided by Edge suggest that these fixtures are similar to a 10k bulb (with a little bit of tweaking here and there in the ranges).

My set up is relatively simple with mostly "easy" corals such as GSPs and a few mushrooms and leathers - corals that would say decently healthy when lit up with nothing more than a flashlight. So for me, it's hard to say - without some willingness to possibly sacrifice some corals - on the power of this fixture for soft coral growth. I will say that after running it for just a few days, none of my corals have shrunk and they remain fully "blossomed" while this light is their only source.

When running all three channels - moonlights, whites, and mixed colors - the output is very similar to what you'd see on a 10k light - sort of reddish and white. Running the white LEDs only or with the blue moonlights still does not look like what you'd think of as the "saltwater color" of lighting. Moonlight only looks similar to any other blue only LED fixture.

Unfortunately I don't have a freshwater planted tank that's the right size for the 48" fixture that I got (my planted tank is only 30" long), but I think this might do well for plant growth.

As for the functionality, I really wish all of the bells and whistles included on this fixture was more common.
