Customer Reviews

The main problem is that the skimmer's water flow regulation is flawed.

Easy to set up but there is 1 mod I did to her to make it the best skimmer out there for biocubes.

Very easy and simple solution -Finally and most important, THE SKIMMER WORKS!

First, I have had experience in the marine aquarium hobby for almost 8 years now. That being said I have always had smaller tanks and I am by no means and expert. I did my research on this product and several others for about a month now and they all have similar complaints between noise, micro bubbles, break in period, fine tuning, and most importantly production. This was recommended to me by a local aquarium store for my 36g bowfront even though it is recommended for up to 30 gallons.

The concept every protein skimmer is based on is very simple so the fact that this is small or self contained should not discourage you.

Here are the main points I would like to make clear:

-The air intake is right at the water line and will get water in it causing the gargling noise everyone hates. The mod everyone has spoken about on YouTube is very simple and easy, took me 5 minutes. Just be careful not to crack the plastic. Its unfortunate that when buying a brand new product you need to make immediate mods to it but that just the facts. I purchased a black air hose and air control valve from a local pet store. This solves you noise problems and allows you to regulate your air very easily.

- Even with the water control fully open my cup still continued to flood but again with the air control valve its very easy to adjust and was fixed within the first minute of use.

-Noise from vibration is almost nonexistent, very similar to a HOB filter but because the skimmer is completely submerged, the noise is dampened.

-This skimmer does produce several micro bubbles, especially in the beginning but adding simple and cheap filter floss or filter pad around the outflow or behind the skimmer (in refugium) solves your problems.

Mine took about a month or so to break in. Once that was over it's worked quite well on my 29gal bio cube. I also learned to not clean the riser section of the collection cup. I think the slime coat it develops assists with the bubble migration. I rinse it still but I don't scrub it clean. I get decent skim from it though it's always been a little wet.

I bought this for a nano tank, the Nuvo 16g. The dimensions don't account for the brackets needed to hold the device together, so give yourself a little extra room. I had to sand down quite a bit of material to get this thing to fit in the chamber. In addition, I recommend the airline mod. We'll see if it works, but overall it's a pretty quiet unit. You also need to place some filter material after the outflow to avoid the micro bubbles.

You need to modify the air tube to make it work, also this thing is a super tight fit for the bio and nano cube, honestly just do regular water changes and you don't need this at all.

I really want to like this thing, as it seems to accomplish its primary function and pull crud out of the water. But the design is infuriating. Its not for a stamdard tank with a plastic hood. It protrudes 4 inches into the tank, and the cup is on the side furthest from the glass. I modified my hood to accommodate it with a dremel plastic saw. Thats ok. First, I have to mention that my unit doesnt seal properly, the plastic is slightly warped, so im going to try to return it. The case is made of 2 peices that loosely fit together, and are held by brackets that slide into place around the back and sides. The brackets also are the anchors for 4 suction cups. The suction cups wont stay attached to the bracket, you'll need some silicon. The outflow valve and the collection cup are also poorly fitted and difficult to remove or adjust. All of these things by themselves arent really big problems, but what happens to me is this-i need to adjust the valve, or remove the cup. They stick, so the suction cups come off when I apply the necessary force. Trying to get the cups back on causes the bracket to slide, and since the halves wont fit flush with eachother, it slips apart and I need to pull the whole thing out. That said, it works. If I never had to touch it, id be pretty happy. I wouldnt buy this one if you have a typical plastic hood, and a low tolerance for aggravating manufacturing flaws.

This item will work. You need to keep your salinity 1.023 or higher to get it create foamy bubbles that will produce any wast. Also it is extremely sensitive to water level. I had mine pretty far out of the water probably about 1 inch above there recommendations, otherwise the cup will fill up way to quickly. Also this item does have a break in time the first day it skimmed yellow wet and I was excited to see. But the next week it wouldn't produce anything. Then I got it to produce yellow wet skim again. Furthermore, it is quite. I have no complaints on the noise. Another thing is it does not need any bubbly mechanism, it is powered by a needle wheel, but it does not produce enough foamy bubbles for me. Ultimately this product will work. However, everyday you will probably need to adjust the depth of the skimmer in the water. If you are set getting one in this price range you can try it out. Personally the skimmer is not worth it, just do weekly water changes.
I got the Hydor slim skimmer for my oceanic biocube 29 gallon. Only took minor modifications to make it fit. It works better so far and it hasn't even gone through the break in period.
