Book Description

1999
This book fills a long-standing need for a comprehensive, easy-to-use guide to the aquatic and wetland plants of the Gulf Coast from New Orleans to Brownsville (including all of the Texas coast). Charles D. Stutzenbaker, a retired wildlife biologist, describes the habitat requirements, wildlife values, and propagation and management possibilities for 442 plants, which are illustrated by pen-and-ink drawings and habitat and scale photographs for field identification. The plants are arranged by growth characteristics, ranging from free-floating aquatics to shrubs, and each plant occupies a handy, two-page spread.

About the Author

CHARLES D. STUTZENBAKER was born on a cotton farm in Fort Bend County, Texas, in 1934. He served in the U.S. Army and graduated from Texas A&M University with a bachelor of science degree in wildlife management.

Stutzenbaker retired rom Texas Parks and Wildlife in 1995, after a thirty-six-year career as a research and management-oriented wildlife biologist dealing primarily with wetlands and migratory birds. The scope of his work involved activities at the local, state, national, and international levels. As a result, he is a widely recognized authority on migratory birds and wetland environments.

A frequently published biologist, his major works include a textbook on wildlife management and the definitive work on the mottled duck.

5.0 out of 5 stars Aquatic and Wetland Plants of the Western Gulf Coast, May 15, 2000
For anyone who does wetland delineations in Texas, this book is a must. All the pictures are well detailed, and the descriptions of the flora are first rate. It's an excellent field guide.

I have found this book extremely useful for me an interested amateur with no technical background. I find the book very accessible. The illustrations and photos are very good and the text is excellent.

This review is from: Aquatic and Wetland Plants of the Western Gulf Coast (Paperback)
This is the best book ever written for identification of fresh and saltwater aquatic and wetland plants along the Texas and Louisiana Gulf Coast.

I can't believe that it's out-of-print in paperback as this constitutes a great void in the available knowledge for the growing number of people who are becoming interested in learning about these plants and identifying which ones are valuable to wildlife, and which ones are detrimental.
