Both bulbs flickered, but then started working.

The light this gives off is much more natural than other lights I have bought--it makes my tank look clear, not greenish.

This Aqueon 8000K bulb is a standard offering in many aquarium kits that include a hood and bulb. They are available in several lengths. I am reviewing the 48" bulb.

We have four very colorful Shubunkin goldfish. When they were small, we had them in a standard 55-gallon aquarium that came equipped with the 8000K Aqueon bulbs. The tank had a dark navy blue background. The Aqueon 8000K bulbs were perfect for the combinations of colors in the fish (orange, brown, blue, silver, and white) as well as the dark solid color background. In fact, the colors of these fish were pleasingly vivid under this light.

After a year, the fish were getting too large for the 55-gallon tank, so we moved to a 120-gallon. I purchased a custom-made hood with a pair of HO T5 bulbs, one at 6500K, the other at 10,000K, because an 8000K bulb was not available in a T5. The T5 bulbs were extremely bright and lit the tank to the point I thought I'd have to buy sunglasses for the fish. Algae growth increased dramatically. The new lights also imparted a greenish cast to the navy blue background. And, the HO ballasts emitted a lot of heat.

I purchased a different hood that held a pair of T8 bulbs, trying several different combinations from ZooMed. It was amasing how slightly different C/T bulbs affected the colors of the fish, gravel, and background. Bulbs at 6500K literally turned the fishes' colors from vivid to very washed-out. I ultimately went back to the Aqueon 8000K bulb for the main light, and used a Zoo Med Coral Sun Actinic 420 Coral Bulb T8 32 Watts, 48-Inch in the second slot.

Not a good choice for planted tanks. The bulb may say daylight spectrum and the analysis on the box may show that it is comparable to other plant specific bulbs, but my plants have slowly died off over three weeks after changing the bulb (which was the only change to the tank).
The plants looked super green after changing the bulb, artificially green, they almost looked like they were glowing. The leaves have slowly begun turning brown.
I put the old bulb back in, which is extremely dim, and the plants have started coming back.
Haven't been able to source 14" plant bulbs locally.

The product is great.... HOWEVER, it does not give off the same light as my other three.
YES, I ordered the right bulb. Exactly the same information.
18inch, Full Spectrum Daylight 15 watt

Well, my advice is when ording, if you have two or more bulbs in you aquarium oe two or more aquariums, ORDER A COMPLETE CHANGE OF ALL THE BULBS or order spares at the same time you order the originals so that you will have a few spares on hand for when they go out.......

My old lamp that came originally with my tank died so I bought a new one. I needed the 8000k t8 24"L full spectrum daylight lamp. I bought one online and the picture even showed 8000k online, but when I received it, the 8000k was not shown on the box like the picture on amazon. In fact it doesn't even tell you how many k this thing has. I replaced my old bulb and instead of having a white light like I had, my tank looks green.

I bought this light to replace a Zoo Med full spectrum bulb that was just so-so for my 15 gal female guppy tank. I'm way happier with this one than the Zoo Med. Some reviewers have stated that they get a yellowish hue with the light. However, in my opinion, the light this bulb gives off is very white, with an almost undetectable bluish tint that reminds me of saltwater aquariums. I have included a photo in the "customer images" section.

I only have simple anacharis plants in my aquarium and so far they have been growing at the same rate of speed as with my old Zoo Med light. My fish seem happy! This light was a great price for a quality product.

I love the light from these, and have used them over the Power-Glo because the light is so much better from this brand. However as others have noted in these reviews - the country of manufacture has changed, and the quality has gone down hill in a major way.

Both bulbs flickered, but then started working. Even though they both had 'loose' pieces inside, and felt very cheap.. Within 2 weeks one of them failed to properly illuminate, and flickered. Basically, it lasted two weeks, when on average - these used to last 2 YEARS. So something changed, these are pretty terrible now. This saddens me, another good product gone down the tubes.. (no pun intended)

EDIT: SOLUTION FOUND!!! To find the 'right' color, you want to search for COLORMAX bulbs.. Apparently this company outsources their normal bulbs to some cheap company overseas. But has retained the 'colormax' version to be made in Germany, with the true Full Spectrum 'purpleish' glow we all love.. This will solve all of the issues with people unhappy with Aqueons new junk manufacturer.

What a difference 18 months makes. In Dec, 2011 I purchased the Aqueon 18 in fluorescent right here on Amazon, and paid $8.18 for TWO bulbs. (that's right, two). At that time, the ones I received were Made in China, and I just recently started using the second one, and the first lasted a good 18 months at 12 hrs a day. They seemed like well made bulbs.

After installing the second one I purchased, I no longer had any spares on hand and it was time to purchase more. So I came back to Amazon and bought them again. They were $8.58 this time, and I thought "OK, the price has gone up a little." When I received the bulb, I was surprised that the $8.58 only bought me ***ONE*** bulb this time. I went back to the ad and sure enough, it was for one bulb, my mistake, I did not read closely enough - I assumed it was two since I received two for less last time. So something about Aqueon bulbs resulted in 100% markup in the last 18 months.

So why the two star rating? Not because of the price - I did not have to purchase it, so that is not why it is rated two stars. I installed it to test it out, and it flickered and was not as bright. It appeared new and unused, I inspected carefully after noticing how poorly it performed. It read "Made in Thailand" this time, so apparently the country of manufacture changed since my last purchase. In addition to the poor performance, it also appears to be poorly constructed compared to the bulbs I bought 18 months ago. The ends / conductor tines were not as well fastened and were loose and hard to install. One bent on initial install, and this would make it very difficult to install a second time.
