5.0 out of 5 stars Su musica reta cualquier comparacion posible, June 21, 2002
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)

5.0 out of 5 stars REFRESHING LYRICS AND INTERESTING USE OF THE ACCORDEON., August 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
AS A FOLLOWER OF ROCK IN SPANISH, YOU CAN EASILY GET USED TO A LOT OF THE SAME, THIS CD OFFERS SEVERAL REFRESHING INNOVATIONS. FIRST OF ALL THIS IS A YOUNG WOMAN AND ALTOUGH THAT WITHIN ITSELF IS NOTHING NEW. WHAT IS NEW IS THE FACT THAT SHE DOESN'T TRY TO IMITATE WHAT HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE BY ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL BAND, SHE DOESN'T TRY TO SNEAK IN TO THE MUSIC SCENE WITH A WARM & FUZZY ALBUM, SHE COMES RIGHT AT YOU AND LETS YOU KNOW EXACTLY HOW SHE FEELS AND THINKS. ANOTHER INTERESTING DETAIL ABOUT THIS ALBUM IS THE FACT THAT SHE WRITES AND COMPOSES HER OWN MUSIC, WHICH AGAIN GIVES HER THE FREEDOM TO TAKE YOU ON HER JOURNEY NOT ONLY WITH HER WORDS, BUT ALSO BY PAINTING HER OWN BACKGROUNDS WITH THE MUSIC. HER USE OF THE ACCORDEON IN MUSIC OTHER THAN REGIONAL TEXAN MUSIC IS ALSO NOTEWORTHY. SOMETHING THAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION WAS THE FACT THAT THE MEXICAN MEDIA RUSHED TO LABEL HER MUSIC AS ROCK. IN SHORT, I THINK THIS IS THE BEST DEBUT I HAVE HEARD IN A LONG TIME, AND! SHOULD NOT TO BE MISSED.

5.0 out of 5 stars Raw, original, strong, sultry, witty..., July 2, 2006
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
The best, in my opinion out of her 4 CDs.
I was initially going to rate it a 4 out of 5 stars, but who am I kidding, I have been listening to this CD continuously for years. I drop it and pick it up again!
Julieta is a one-of-a-kind gem from Mexico, but trandescends languages.

5.0 out of 5 stars What A Sound!, April 15, 2003
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
This, julieta's 1st album as a solista is so refreshing as is "bueninvento" her 2nd.
She mixes her excellent accordian playing with a broad rock style which at times can be almost goth "libertad", and at times, more upbeat "de mis pasos". Her delicate voice adds deep meaning to the music, as there is a sort of sadness found within. I really believe that Ms. Venegas's music will appeal to fans of many generes, as it is so original and catchy and intelligent.
My faves are "antes", "Opurtunidad" and "libertad"

5.0 out of 5 stars LA MILAGROSA, September 3, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
What else coud you expect from the author of one of thegreatest rock en espanol songs in the history. "Pobre de ti"from the group Tijuana NO was written by la Venegas when she was part of the group. She left the city of Tijuana to go to the "capital". Its obvious that she turned into this great songwritter. Her music has everything on it, its agressive in a very "sutil" way. Her music brings up different moods dragging you into diffenrent worlds. There is nothing missing from this album and is a definetly buy. Look for her new album that should be coming out soon, I heard she has a band now. May be her twin sister is in it !!!!!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Transcends language, January 21, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
Wonderful, catchy arrangements and clear vocal delivery make this album truly accessible. Though I personally know very little Spanish, Julieta's attitude and style translate perfectly through her vocal delivery. Fresh use (by US standards) of the accordion and sparse arrangements keep it interesting. I just wish there were other albums domestically available!

5.0 out of 5 stars Don't know what she is saying, but somehow I understand it., December 6, 1998

What a welcome surprise from pop/salsa (no offense, I like those sometimes). Her songs are strong, and remind me of early Tori Amos, the piano parts, the wailing, especially tracks 01, Oportunidad; and 07, Esta vez. Track 11, Sabiendose de los descalzos, is tribal and makes me want to stamp my feet in anger. Who knows why. Only negative, is the tiny transcription of the lyrics, in a vertical Japanese style, which makes decryption nearly impossible.

5.0 out of 5 stars she's what they said she is..greatness!, May 25, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
recently i read a full article about julieta venegas. i had neverheard of her before but the articlehad enough power to propel me tobuy this cd,'aqui.' she seemsto have been inspired in part bytori amos as evidenced by the pianoat the very beginning of the disc.her creativity and musicianshipgive new meaning to the use of theaccordian. who knew?? the songwriting is in the pocket! this girlknows what she's doing. this isan interesting array of musicalstyles. pop, hip-hop, salsa, jazzwith alternative/rock overtones.not everyone will embrace her vocals. i had this disc on at workand my boss moved onto the next cdin the player 2/3 into it cause shehad enough. what she lacks in compelling vocal ability/range, etc...she makes up for in emotional delivery. i have a very sensitive/picky ear when it comes to vocalsand i will pick up nuances thatmany others don't. i cant help iti seem to have been born with this.i want to give kudos to the producer who apparently is THE prodoucer of alternative music inmexico. his work is on par with thebest in the u.s. i am disappointedmany times by the recording qualityon cd's in the u.s. therefore, iwas so happy to be able to blastthis cd and maintain full, vibrantclarity on all levels in my carwhich is where i do most of my music listening. i wait on batedbreath for julieta's next release.hopefully soon. she has got to bedestined for international fame!

5.0 out of 5 stars The next big thing? Maybe, December 5, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Aqui (Audio CD)
I heard this CD playing in a record store and had to have it. My prediction: this album will be re-released in a year or two with a couple of English language tracks on it, and it will cross over to a wide pop/rock audience. (Don't get accordian fright - on this record the instrument is not obtrusive. Venegas plays piano as much or more, and that coupled with her songwriting makes me think she'll appeal to the pretty sizeable Fiona Apple audience.) If there's any justice, Venegas will get some attention from U.S. mainstream listeners.
