About the Artist

Milly Quezada was born in Santo Domingo, the daughter of two Cibao natives and sister of four musician brothers. Growing up in such a musical family, Quezada became interested in music as a toddler--she would sing along with her brothers for family, friends and small gatherings near her home.

She expressed an interest in developing her singing talents as a young girl, and, partly for this reason the Quezada family moved to New York City when she was still a child.

Milly spent her pre-teen and teen years in New York, a city that is well known as a school for Merengue and Salsa singers from its Latino barrios, e.g. Spanish Harlem. In New York, Quezada developed an in-depth knowledge of her favorite musical genre, the fastest of the Latin American popular dance music styles, sung in Spanish and native to the Dominican Republic (see also Son Cubano, Rumba, Salsa, Cha-Cha-Cha, and Punta for comparison, as well as Kompa, the style sung in kreyòl in neighboring Haiti). Merengue has been comically referred to as "the Latino weight-loss program" since it is an infectious rhythm, and the songs tend to inspire adherents to enthusiastic dancing. After graduating from high school in New York, she attended City College of New York, graduating with a university degree in communications.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album from Dominican Queen of Merengue September 4, 2011
By jtmangu
Format:Audio CD
Milly Quezada is back with a fine recording that combines the best of the old style merengue with a touch of other Afro-Carribean rhythms. Her
singing is stellar through the album. No wonder she is and will always be the one and only Queen of Merengue. Killer tracks include her work with
Juan Luis Guerra on the upbeat Toma Mi Vida.
It's a shame the category for best Latin recording category was eliminated: This recording would be nominated and would rightfully win several awards
in whatever category it was placed in.
Milly Aqui Estoy Yo you're number 1 fan. Que viva el merengue.

4.0 out of 5 stars She's Done it Again! August 30, 2011

**** 1/2

After Milly's amazing album Solo Faltas Tu, I approached Aqui Estoy Yo with the same anticipation and that I felt after Juan Luis Guerra's landmark Llave de Mi Corazon - that is, so good, the culmination of her career - and therefore a really tough act to follow.

At first I wasn't sure how much I liked this album, but it has grown on my tremendously and I can see unequivocally that this is one amazing album, lacking a bit of the weight of Solo Faltas Tu, but yet with a new level of sophistication not before experienced. The only thing that keeps me from giving Aqui Estoy Yo 5 stars is that a couple of the songs are not of the same quality as the others, as I will describe below.

First of all, Milly's singing just gets better and better - age is doing nothing to diminish her voice, and her ability to truly inhabit a song makes her, for me, without a doubt the finest Latina singer working today.

The songs begins with No Me Interesa. which, while not the barnburner one usually gets at the start of a Milly Quezada album, is nonetheless charming and delightful, and quite subtle.

Contigo El Amor is a perfectly nice merengue, but is really somewhat routine, and not of the same importance as most of the rest of the album. This is unfortunate in that it occupies the crucial second track position of the album. In my opinion, this does diminish a bit the overall architecture of the album.

Llorare por El, shows again Milly should also be the Queen of Bachata. In fact as far as I am concerned she is. A gorgeous song, and the arrangement is truly inventive. There is one moment, in the transition between verses that literlly takes my breath away (where they whisper "Milly!".
