4.0 out of 5 stars Handle With Care
Everything you wanted to know about illegally converting your AR-15 into a fully automatic machine gun, complete with machine lathe diagrams and clear warnings. It's interesting reading but I wouldn't brag about it at the local pub.

This pamphlet was probably worth its weight in gold back in 1981; but today it doesn't offer much.

This pamphlet was probably worth its weight in gold back in 1981; but today it doesn't offer much.

I bought this pamphlet for, as they say, informational purposes. I wanted to know how the M16 full-auto firing system worked, and nothing more. This pamphlet gives ZERO information on internal operation. What it does is show the differences between AR-15 and M16 parts... the trigger, hammer, disconnector, safety selector, and bolt carrier. It also describes the one part you won't find in an AR-15: the auto-sear. Armed with this new information, I believe I've been able to piece together in my mind how the full-auto system works, at least in terms of "what" needs to be done if not 100% exactly "how" the parts all work together; but I also had a fairly strong knowledge of the AR fire control system to begin with. If you don't already understand the internal workings of the AR or M16, this pamphlet won't help you one bit in that regard.

Informational purposes aside, let's say that you really did want to convert your AR-15 into a full-auto rifle (which is perfectly legal, from a federal perspective at least, by filing the appropriate BATFE forms and, of course, paying the imposed tax). This pamphlet specifically states that no manufacturer sells the auto sear anymore, since that part alone is subject to Class III regulation. The pamphlet does, however, give blueprints for making your own auto sear if you happen to be a home machinist; but while that's certainly useful, it's not enough because the pamphlet assumes that the other M16 fire control parts are readily available to replace the standard AR parts, which to the best of my knowledge they are not. Thus, a home machinist would need blueprints for the other small parts as well, or be able to modify standard AR parts via filing, welding, etc. So while I'm sure it "can" be done, it's not exactly feasible for folks w/o machine skills.

Anyway, it only took me a couple hours to read the pamphlet, examine the photos & auto-sear blueprint in detail, and piece it all together. I've certainly done worse things with my time before, but overall it was disappointing.

This is a fine book for beginers. If you have been in the military then you already should know this book.

This book is useless. If you don't know anything and I mean anything about a full auto m 16 still don't buy the book. A lot of what is covered in this book can be read on the internet through forums and Google if researched.
