Product Description
Could you imagine a better way to start of the new century than with a recording of your favorite Armenian and Middle Eastern dance music!? For the first time, an actual LIVE recording of an Armenian dance has been produced by American Recording Productions (ARP). Recorded in Detroit, Michigan, the Ara Topouzian Ensemble strives to preserve traditional Armenian and Middle Eastern sounds that have been brought to the United States by immigrant musicians. The ensemble features some of the most talented musicians performing this style of music. Leon Janikian on clarinet is featured on this CD. Currently a music and recording professor at Northeastern University, Janikian has been playing Armenian and Middle Eastern music most of his life. He has performed with virtually every musician playing this style of music. An underrated musician, it is a pleasure to debut him on the (ARP) label. No stranger to ARP is Dick Barsamian on oud that has recorded several CDs for the label with Ara Topouzian. Barsamian is introducing a new flavor to his oud playing on this album in that he is playing an electric oud, rather than the commonly used acoustic oud (Middle Eastern lute). The leader of this group and president of ARP is Ara Topouzian on the kanun. His sounds on this Middle Eastern laptop zither add to the ensembles high-energetic dance music. Recently, Topouzian along with Barsamian, appeared in the nationwide PBS documentary on the Armenian-Americans. Along with the lead musicians consists of a talented rhythmic section including Jay Baronian on dumbeg and vocals. The timed sounds of the dumbeg (hour glass shaped hand drum) is a staple to traditional and modern Middle Eastern music. Ken Kalajian on guitar and Stepan Megerdichian on bass guitar are two musicians that interact their playing in order to drive the sound of this album.
