Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 6-10-A revision of a title formerly appearing in "The Peoples of North America" series (Chelsea), this edition has been minimally but carefully changed, primarily to reflect the current political situation in the Middle East and to update the biographical sketches of prominent Arab Americans. The clearly written text includes a historical sketch of the Arabs' culture and homeland and lengthy descriptions of immigration prior to 1924 (mainly of Syrian Christians from present-day Lebanon); explains how these people lived (many as peddlers and later as shopkeepers); and shows how they assimilated into American life while working to maintain their ethnic identity. A later chapter covers the more diverse post-World War II Arab immigration and its impact on the earlier arrivals. The book concludes with biographical profiles of figures such as Ralph Nader and Donna Shalala. The full-color pictorial portfolio remains the same. Of the numerous black-and-white photographs scattered throughout, only a handful have been changed. The bibliography contains current and standard works as well as Web sites. For libraries not owning the earlier edition, this is a fine opportunity to pick up a thoughtful, well-balanced account about Arab Americans.

One of a series celebrating our diverse ethnic heritage, this volume begins with late 19th century Syrians who left Ottoman-ruled Syria/Lebanon for the New World. They were fully assimilated when a second wave - educated professionals from countries such as Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Syria - arrived after World War II sparking new ethnic pride among the descendants of the first immigrants.
