As an European graphic designer now working in the Gulf region, I found myself profoundly ashamed of how little did I know about arabic and persian contemporary graphic design before moving here! This book is an excellent and comprehensive showcase of the works of the most prominent and emerging graphic designers and visual artists from the arab world. It is an absolute must-have for anyone interested in topic such as modern arabic type design. It is well designed with accurate information and plenty of beautiful illustrations and photos.
The book would deserve five stars if it weren't for the custom made typeface used through the book: a western typeface that mimics arabic calligraphic style. Maybe it is not entirely rational, but I just hate all these 'alì baba fonts'; of course I am all in favour of contamination and cross-cultural design; I just feel that designing a western typeface so that a lower case 'a' resemble a 'ta marbuta', the 'q' resembles a 'waa' and so on, it is not the way to achieve something new and interesting, no matter how beautifully crafted such a typeface might be.

The book was in great shape, the wait time was negligible. The content was amazing and I would suggest it for others.

I think it's stunning. Contemporary graphic design featured in a beautiful book. I found this review online and bought the book after, it did not disappoint.

I bought this book hoping for lots of examples of middle eastern design to inspire quilts -- tiles, fabrics, embroideries, architectural design, etc. That's not what this is (despite the cover art, which is beautiful and suggests such a thing). There are many many examples of typefaces for Arabic which might be useful to some people. The designs for signs, websites, graffiti, and advertising are, to my eye, rather junky, images that I would rather not gaze at for very long. Lots of scribbling, images on top one another (I suppose this is stylish), and cartoon-like art. It wasn't what I was hoping for and I will discard this book in the next trip to Goodwill.
