Biography

"JOHN KLEMMER BIOGRAPHY ADDENDUM"

"John Klemmer is an enigma to many. He seems to be a "different artist" to "different people", depending on which musical direction & time period of Klemmer's music they are attached to, are aware of & prefer.
More than will ever be able to properly portray, Klemmer is quick, smart, funny, highly observant, still seeking musical truth, a true romantic and the… Read more in Amazon's John Klemmer Store

5.0 out of 5 stars Great blend of various Klemmer styles w/ Brazilian Taste, August 18, 2000

This review is from: Arabesque (Audio CD)
This was my very first Klemmer album (literally, a vinyl LP in 1983 or so). I found the saxophone playing so soulful and all encompasing. While some of his other work may be a little more fun and over-the-top - like the early ABC issued album with Klemmer, Tom Scott and Gato Barberi (spelling?) or his Fresh Feathers cross-over album (when are they going to re-issue that?)...and then he had his "new age" phase before new age was cool, like Touch, Barefoot Ballet, etc. - this album really showcases Klemmer's sheer saxophone playing. The sound is full, thick, beautiful and ingenious. The solos show both a mastery of technique while also giving you a unique window into Klemmer's soul that can only happen when he doesn't let the "head" of the song get in the way. (i.e. although I love alot of his work, the songs on this recording are not so unique as to share the stage with the pure talent of Klemmer). Listen to the samples on the page - if you like them, you'll love the album. This is also my "alltime" favorite studying/working CD out of hundreds.....

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Fusion LP. Bad Re-Issue, February 2, 2009

I've never heard of this musician until I'd seen Barefoot Ballet which was re-issued last year. For me, Klemmer's tenor saxophone sound's a crossover between John Coltrane & Gato Barbieri.

This LP sounds like something that might have been done by the latter as has a strong latin favor. From samba ("Paradise", the title track, Nothing Will Ever be the Same Again Forever", & "Desire"), bossa nova ("Love Affair") & light salsa ("Picasso"). The ballads "Falling" & "Walk in Love" has Klemmer playing with a Barbieri-like sound. Very romantic indeed.

While this a great LP. This re-issue is not. As with other recent Verve re-issues, you're given a digipak with the original liner notes...& that about it. As an added bonus, they also printed the original label catalog number on here (ABC AA 1068. Yes ABC once had a record label: ABC Records. Less than a year after this first came out, they sold it off to MCA).

If you're looking for good 1970s fusion or latin jazz favored album, this is for you. But if you already owned the previous (1995) re-issue, save your money.
