5.0 out of 5 stars A Topflight Tour of Late Renaissance Music!, January 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Arbeau: Orchesographie (Audio CD)
This joyful rendition of Arbeau's "Orchesographie" is a splendid introduction to the music of the 16th Century. Many of you will recognize some of the music, which has graced the soundtracks of many films and such brilliant TV productions as "Elizabeth R". Using all original instruments, the arrangements are imaginative and varied, and both seasoned connoisseurs and neophytes will be delighted with the performances. A must-have album for any afficionado of late Renaissance/early Baroque music, beautifully recorded in the bargain. Some of the movements, such as the pavanes and a number of the delightful Branles (pronounced "brawls"!) are simply wonderful. Most highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Washerwomen, War, and Pease, December 8, 2000

There is little I can add to the previous review -- this music and its interpretation and arrangements are superb. Years ago I purchased this same album on vinyl (remember that?) and I am delighted to see it available now on CD. None of the tunes are particularly rare -- all have been performed in many other collections of Renaissance music -- but the collection of branles by Arbeau and the superb performance make this CD stand out.

In 1985 I took a class in Renaissance dance, and we used this album for the source of the music. Though played a little fast for the beginner, this is perfect for recreating the fun of the country and court of the 1500s. Reprints of Arbeau's book by the same name are available in most libraries, and they describe & teach almost every dance played on this CD. The fun is endless -- just add about 7 or 8 friends (or more!)

The New York Renaissance Band has an excellent performance of Arbeau's French dances. The music is lively and rhythmic, and makes me want to learn Renaissance dance.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great early renaissance music, February 10, 2010

If you like music from 16th century time period this is a really wonderful, upbeat recording, with lots of period instruments--maybe not as finely polished as some--such as the New London Consort--and perhaps that's even more authentic. Reasonably priced too. My only criticism is there really are no liner notes and only a partial list of the songs. All in all, well worth having.
