2.0 out of 5 stars Libro excelente para colectionistas/Excellent book for fruit collectors or enthusiasts, March 26, 2010

This review is from: Arboles Frutales Exoticos Y Poco Conocidos En Puerto Rico (Spanish Edition) (Paperback)

It contains excellent basic information (in Spanish of course) on more than 100 species of truly little known fruits to most people and that are very difficult to indentify and appreciate without this book. It is based on several collections in Puerto Rico but the fruit come from all over the world and deserve greater utilization. It has helped me identify some of the nameless species I have in my collection in Costa Rica and educated me about some that are worth looking for.

It includes a good list of the locations of the collections that have the fruits, including those that sell small trees or seeds. Also included is an abbreviated list (near 50) of other promising fruits without photos. Any person really interested in tropical fruits should buy one! It is good quality and with attractive photos worth sharing with visitors as an educational tool in the incredible unutilized potential that tropical fruits have.

My biggest complaint against the book is that it really doesn't try to describe the fruit tastes. Though this can be difficult, it is a pity that they do not try, since it takes years to grow a tree without knowing how the taste will be! For example the greater Tampoi (Baccaurea macrocarpa) is described as sweet to subacid" like dozens of other fruits. The Tampoi tastes exactly like a combination of Mangosteen (which is 2/3 strawberry and 1/3 mandarin orange and almost excessively sweet, so as to almost be candy) and the chocolate fruit, and one of the most delicious fruits on earth. It is a pity to just use "sweet to subacid".
