Great Value -- Outstanding 335 Copy -- Gorgeous Finish,
By Michael Thomas (Minnesota, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Arbor Hollow Body Electric Guitar, AJ136
This guitar is worth much, much more than the asking price. Not only that, it is a joy to play and sounds terrific in its own right -- irrespective of the low price. I love this guitar! After playing the AJ 335 (black) at a local music store, I talked the owner into ordering me the AJ 336 for $260+tax (after informing him I had found it elsewhere on the Internet for as low as $230). When it arrived, the store owner and I were both stunned at how nicely appointed the 336 is, compared to the 335 -- which is itself a fine guitar, but fairly plain. The gold tuners and pickups, pearl inlay, etc., really dress up this piece, and the sunburst paintjob is absolutely gorgeous. Way nicer than a ~$300 guitar has any right to look. The tone of the pickups is excellent IMHO. I've been playing guitar for almost 30 years and have owned a few guitars, and tried out dozens of different axes in many different music stores. The AJ 335/336 plays nicer and sounds better than just about anything I've tried. It has the classic 335 sound -- full and sweet. It begs you to play funky bar chords, Wes Montgomery-style octaves and blues riffs. And it sounds good with effects and distortion too; it's no heavy metal axe in terms of looks, but the pickups sound very bright and potent. Other reviewers have noted the flimsy pick guard and the mediocre volume and tone knobs on the AJ 335. I've noticed the same issues on the 336, but believe me these very minor nitpicks considering the price. Yes, you can pay $1,100 for a Gretsch and it will have better knobs. Or you can get used to the mediocre knobs (as I have) or replace them for the price of a couple of 12 packs of Heineken. I guess if I had one complaint it would be that the fretboard is not as smooth as I would like. But I haven't attempted to wax it or anything yet, and in fact it has already improved as I've played it and polished it wth fingerprint oil. Bottom line: If you must have a guitar that says "Gretsch" or "Gibson" on the tuning head, then why are you reading this review? Go buy the brand name of your choice and enjoy having a lighter wallet and a more prestigious name on your fiddle. But if you care about value, and want quality sound, great playability and good looks for a ridiculously low price, then buy an AJ 336.
