Product Description

Luminarc is the oldest brand currently sold by Arc, launched in 1948. Arc International is a French manufacturer and distributor of household goods. The company was established in Arques, Pas-de-Calais, where it is still headquartered, as a glass-making firm under the name Verrerie des Sept Ecluses in 1825.

Have had these for years and absolutely love them. Nothing better for drinking a ton of iced tea or coffee than this large sized glass (21 oz); nothing better for sipping fresh juice or an on-the-rocks-type drink than the suitably shaped smaller one also available from Amazon (14 oz.). And I LOVE that you can just pop a top on anything left in your glass and stow it in the fridge for later. You can buy the lids separately or buy sets that include the lid (just search Amazon for "working glass"). You can also buy these glasses individually, available today at least from an Amazon seller and fulfilled by Amazon so that they ship free for Prime members, although each glass is much more expensive from that seller...

You can totally trust the lids. Last week I took a full 21 oz. glass with lid into the car, planning to drink my iced coffee on the road. Alas, it wouldn't fit in the (small) cup holder of my ancient car, so I kind of propped it in the holder where it sat at a 45 degree angle for the whole trip. Actually, only for the 1st half of the trip -- until I went too fast around a corner, when the whole thing flew out of the holder and rolled on its side all the way across the floor to rest horizontally against the passenger door for the rest of the trip. When I finally arrived, no spills anywhere, not a drop. Amazing. No breakage, either: these things are called "working" for a reason! I routinely pack filled glasses with lids in picnic baskets for salad dressings, fruit sauce, etc. -- they work beautifully.

I also use the large (or, more often, the smaller sized one) as an odor-proof jar in the fridge for storing chopped onions until cooking time. Also as a shaker jar to mix slurry (flour and water) for gravy or to mix eggs for scrambling.

Possibly the best everyday drinking glass ever made, the Luminarc Working Glass is thick, durable and versatile. It can be used as a tumbler, a canning jar, and for food storage (with the plastic snap-on lid - often sold separately). From fridge to microwave without fear of breaking, they handle piping hot liquids as well as anything ice cold. I never have fewer than 12 on hand because at least half of them are in the fridge storing leftovers -- much, much better than plastic storage containers. For hot tea or coffee, there is really nothing better. The 21 oz (750ml) glass is supplemented by the 14 oz (500 ml) "juice" class, also suitable for canning and storing leftovers using the same snap-on lid. Very highly recommended, especially for households with small children. You CAN break these things, but you will have to work at it. Not as good as the slightly heavier Working Glasses of prior years, but still well-made and one of the best consumer values around. After researching the Web, I found Amazon's price for a 12-pack with free shipping is the best value at about $2.50 per glass.

I've purchased the Luminarc 750 Working Glass (21 Oz.), along with the 500s. The 750s I purchased in the past are marked on the bottom, as are the 500s, with the manufacturer's mark. These are no marked and have a slight green tint to the glass, whereas the original glasses I purchased with the 500 or 750 (and makers mark) notation on the bottom are crystal clear. Unfortunately now I have a shelf full of glasses that are not the same color....

Update - I went back to the original shipper, which had already been in the recycle bin and Luminarc is on the side of the shipper, but again the glassware is not marked in anyway, and regardless - the glass is not crystal clear, but rather a light green (very faint, but obvious) tint. Side the side the difference is easily seen. Maybe Luminarc has two 'grades' of their 21 oz Working Glass.... I would not buy this variation again due to the fact they don't match the rest of the cabinet full of Luminarc I already had.

I have a few glasses that looked like these for decades and they work well in the microwave and freezer, and seem indestructable. Have been looking for more to buy and finally found these. However in the few weeks since I had them, 4 had chipped and 2 broke. So I brought the more expensive ones offered by amazon with lids to replace them, and noticed those had logo stamps on the bottom and they seem more sturdy. I am wondering if these cheaper glasses are knock offs. Well they are cheaper I guess.

These are thick glasses and have a nice rounded lip at the top. I waited to see if we liked the first set and we did. So, these are our second set and we couldn't be happier. Cheers :-)

Great for drinking water or storing leftover food (with matching lids). They were all perfect -- no flaws -- and shipped amazingly fast.

Not as good as they use to be. I have a set of the smaller glasses that are 12 years old and still in perfect condition. I purchased these 6 weeks ago and already chipped the lip of 3 of them. The lip isn't as thick as the older ones I own and just bumping them together while washing them caused a stress crack on 2 of the outer lips. And the 3rd one the inside lip chipped when I bumped it against the faucet when I was filling it. I love the volume they hold but they just aren't as good as the older ones.
