Editorial Reviews

Arc Iris is the orchestral pop project of Jocie Adams, a former core member of The Low Anthem. The singer and multi-instrumentalist formed the collective to present her ambitious new songs. The band includes a collective of 4 musicians plus Jocie with additional players frequently joining to expand the sound further, to create their wild exploration of all kinds of musical styles - jazz, prog rock, blues, country, folk, and classical styles.

Bob Boilen of NPR All Songs Considered calls the music "somewhat cabaret, somewhat orchestral folk, a bit of show tune and jazz band, " while The Deli Magazine writes, "the five-piece group had everything you could want in a live performance--intense energy, appreciation for performing and incredible talent…they are something akin to a soul/folk/jazz amalgamation. "

I saw Arc Iris live as an opening act for Nicole Atkins and, unlike most opening acts I've ever seen, really enjoyed them. Not many bands you see have a cello as a key part. They are very "musical" in that their arrangements are quite complex but not so much so that they lose you. Something different always seems to be happening and in a way that works. The arrangements remind me a bit of more musical Frank Zappa songs in that many surprising things are constantly happening. The lead singer is really the star and her quirky soprano may remind you of a young Kate Bush. So I bought this album wondering if the sound would hold up in a studio setting and was very pleased with the result. I'd recommend giving this a listen.

This album is a little bit of special. It has beautiful vocals layered over a banjo and a driving rhythm section. There is a cello and trumpet playing catch. The piano hits all the right notes. They have witty winking lyrics. And then there is the waltzing. Oh the waltzing they have. All on the first track. I think I made it approximately forty seconds into the song before I decided to commit to the ride.

While the reviews I have seen emphasized the band's eclecticism, it is worth noting that all the musicians are technically superb. With their skill and the lead singer's substantial charisma they take us through dozens of ideas without missing a beat. Listening to this album the first time was a treat. Listening to it again, well that was practically mandatory.

This album is a wonderful blend of folk, classical, and many other styles of music. You will not expect the meter and chord changes you hear. You will not expect the leaps in the melodies or all the different instrumentation. Jocie's voice is unusual and fun. Any true musician will appreciate this!

I don't understand any of the posted reviews of this album. The references to it sounding like Kate Bush are baffling to me. I see no resemblance--and I've been listening to Kate Bush for forty years. If comparing the sound of Jocie's voice to Kate Bush makes people want to check it out and buy it, then fine, but I have the feeling you'll be disappointed if that's all you're looking for. What this does sound like is Jocie Adams set free. I loved her in The Low Anthem and I loved her first solo album, but this Arc Iris is quite different and quite beautiful. And it's a got a lot more fun in it than those previous works. There are times when the sound is folksy, times when the sound is a bit jazz age-y, times when it is quite classical(y) . . . but all of it works. The songs are very distinct from each other --and all of the tracks are worth having.

Even the 5 star reviews posted for this album seemed kind of tepid to me, so I'll put it this way: this album kicks so much ass that when you're finished listening all you'll have is an empty pair of pants flapping in the wind. It's well worth the $9.49 you need to plop down for an mp3 download . . . though that cover is so pretty that you should probably just go ahead and get the lp version for $15.54. This isn't your run of the mill, freeze dried music. It's got snap and verve. It's got spunk.

BTW, I'm sorry to say that I know nothing about the other members of Arc Iris, so I've put all of my focus on Jocie. I do know this, though: they play the s*** out of these songs. And they sound young and full of life. So give the kids a break and put down some coin for this album.
