GameSpot Review

A long time ago in a game developer's room far, far away, Namco created Galaxian, and it was good. It set the player in a small spaceship and commanded him to destroy all aliens, which basically meant that it was a Space Invaders clone. Not that there is anything wrong with that, of course, but it doesn't exactly have what it takes in the "long-term playability" department. However, it paved the way for Galaga. Galaga is quite simply one of the best examples of how a game can be so simple yet so amazingly addictive it's almost scary. The objective is still the same - shoot everything that moves - but the extras spice up the proceedings so much. For example, every now and again, an alien will come down to the bottom half of the screen and start firing a tractor beam. Move into its path, and your spaceship gets captured. Here's the cool bit - if you manage to rescue your stolen ship by shooting the alien that is carrying it, the old ship gets bolted onto your new one, creating a bigger spaceship with twice the firepower! Other sections such as bonus stages can yield big rewards and different attack-wave patterns. It's good to see classic shooters like these make a return in a portable format. --Cameron Davis

3.0 out of 5 stars Galaga is great, Galaxian is not so much, August 7, 2008
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Arcade Classic 3: Galaga / Galaxian (Game Cartridge)
This is yet another random Gameboy game I picked up and started playing again. Obviously these are just ports of other versions of Galaga. This game however has two games in one. Galaga is an awesome game. Galaxian is repeitive as ever. I would give Galaga four stars overall, but Galaxian two stars overall. That is why this game pack is only three stars.

Galaga is a top notch game. You are a space ship that stays at the bottom of the screen. You can move horizontally and shoot using either A or B. Enemy ships, which look like bugs to me, will fly out and shoot at you. They will fly into a sequence. Once they have all appeared, some of them will rush at and shoot at you. This is a very basic game that changes from level to level and is very fun and addicting to play.

Galaxian is very much the same. You are a ship and can move horizontally. However, there are just a bunch of ships in sequence for you to shoot at. They will attack you one by one. Once you have destroyed all the ships, another set of ships in the same exact sequence will appear. The difficulty never rises. You continue to destroy the same thing over and over again. The whole purpose of this game is to get a high score. However, it soon loses its enjoyment when you realize it is just the same thing over and over again.

I would suggest picking this one up for Galaga. Keeping high scores on both of the games can be very fun though. Having multiple people playing it trying to beat each others scores is the best. Be warned though, Gameboy games are able to save because of a small battery in the cartridge. This game was made in 1990, so the odds of the battery still being alive is slim. This means none of your high scores will be saved.
