4.0 out of 5 stars One of the best retro collections for the ps1!, April 19, 2003
This review is from: Arcade's Greatest Hits : Midway Collection 2 (Misc. Supplies)
If you grew up playing atari like me and fondly remember the simple aracade games of the 80s,then you will love this title.I can honestly tell you that this is one of the best classic game collections you will ever find for the ps1.Definatly more "bang for your buck" with this title, then in other similar collections. Games included are:

MoonPatrol: My personal favorite;I played this forever on atari 2600.Of course graphics are much better, gameplay is extremely addicting and I love the moon patrol soundtrack!Still have that funky tune in my head!Have gone through the A-Z level three times, and it's STILL churning out more gameplay!

Joust2: Believe it or not, this is actually better than the original Joust!Collect golden egg bonuses;fight diffrent enemies like bats, robot vultures and even black knight bosses. You'll also be suprised with in-game voice overs, music and diffrent levels that actually change! While it is a bit tougher,it's just as fun as the original and stays true to it's origin. You'll still fight the other ostrich riders, hurry during the egg wave rounds, and face the same dreaded teradactyl if you take too long!

These two games are worth the price alone, but here are the other
titles in this collection:

BurgerTime: This was a fun game that I played on intellevision and 8-bit nintendo.Make the lettuce, meat, buns etc. fall through each floor to make a sandwhich while dodging fast food baddies. Music is the same as it was in the original.Lots of fun;only thing I didn't like was that there were no limitless continues like in MoonPatrol or Joust2.With only three lives to survive on,you'll only get so far and then.....GAME OVER!Still a great game though.

RootBeerTapper:Orignally without the "root",this arcade was popular in bars during the 80s.Alot of fun serving drinks and catching the empty glasses while listening to "Old Suzanna".After
every level is a bonus round of "find the can of brew that hasn't been shaken up."Like BurgerTime however, this does not have limitless continues either! So you are only going to be able to get so far...

SpyHunter:I remember this game very well;however I was not a big fan of it.I know alot of people who loved playing this game though;and if you were a fan, you'll be pleased to know that everything has been left intact. From the diffrent power ups to the Peter Gun theme.

Splat!:A game very similar to Food Fight! for the atari 7800. Controls are a bit awkward, but you'll get the hang of them.Throw
food at other people and knock their heads off!No real music, just
bleeps and thuds....very retro, and still fun.

Blaster:I don't remember this one,but it has cool,3-D bright color graphics. It is a space game that I can best describe as something that was seen in "The LawnMower Man" movie.I've actually grown strangely addicted to this game, and like how the screen looks when you "die".The game over screen is also pretty cool..."Paradise is 17 billion light years away!" It is actually possible to get to "paradise",but it is EXTREMELY difficult as you always cycle through 4 diffrent types of gameplay.

...If you love retro games and can find a copy of this title, pick it up immediatly! You'll have countless hours of fun and memories by yourself or with a buddy.

4.0 out of 5 stars An excellent retro-compilation., July 30, 2000

This review is from: Arcade's Greatest Hits : Midway Collection 2 (Misc. Supplies)
This is probably my favorite of the Williams/Midway arcade comps so far (although I have yet to play Arcade Party Pack.) The three real gems on this collection are Blaster, Joust 2, and Splat!- none of these games had ever been converted to a home system before.

The controls and their effectiveness differ from game to game. Use of a control pad to play Spy Hunter is imminently dissatisfying (a steering wheel is almost necessary to play it), and Splat! doesn't fare much better- perhaps Sony's hard to find Dual Analog sticks (as opposed to the Dual Shock analog controls) would work better. Joust 2, Burgertime, Blaster, and Moon Patrol all handle very well, and Root Beer Tapper moderately well.

The multimedia portion of the game is also very nice... the story behind Blaster is fascinating to those who are fans of Eugene Jarvis' work.

The only disappointment besides control issues concerns the lack of the original non-Root-Beer Tapper; perhaps because of licensing restrictions, Sony guidelines, or even a wish to avoid a higher ESRB rating only the Root Beer version is included. Thankfully, the multimedia history *does* talk about the original bar-themed version of the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Timeless classic FUN, September 23, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Arcade's Greatest Hits : Midway Collection 2 (Misc. Supplies)
This game was really hard to find because its so old. Finally I got it! Im a classic games fan and I own game & watch gallery(all), namco museum volume 1 & 3, sega arcade gallery, konami arcade advance, and the atari collection 2. Why this version didnt get my attention back then? I didnt know it comes with tapper! One of my favorite classic game of all time! Midway has so MANY good classic games, they should make all of them into one disc for PS2 & XBOX.

Here are the games:
1)BLASTER: I don't remember this in the arcade. You basically fly in 3d fashion going forward shooting things. The graphic is super horrible, worse than atari 2600, the gameplay is horrible too. I never play this dumb game. Score: 0/5.

2)BURGERTIME: You run across burger parts and make them fall down and repeat. Hot dogs, eggs, and other foods are chasing after you! I remember they had this game on coleco vision. Good game, 4/5.

3)JOUST: I was never really a big fan of joust but I remember the game well. Joust 2 is better than Joust 1, because 2 has different looking stageS. Decent game, 3/5.

4)MOON PATROL: This game was popular back in the days. Its not so good now.... Even for nostalgic buffs.... 2/5.

5)ROOTBEER TAPPER: The best game in this collection. You serve drinks from 4 tap stations and slide the mugs down the long bar table. Some customers are quick guzzlers, lol. The original version used budweiser, however back in the days I've only seen rootbeer tapper, hey its still beer. Good graphics. GREAT game, 5/5!

6)SPLAT: Don't remember this in the arcade. The gameplay is quite stupid. You pick up food with 2 hands and try to throw them at the computer player. Score: 0/5.

7)SPY HUNTER: A very popular game back then. The famous music plays for first few seconds of the game and rest of the game is SILENT! I remember the music playing the whole time. This game really shows its age and is honestly horrible now. Score: 1/5.

Overall this collection has 2 GREAT games, especially TAPPER. I would give this a 5 rating if the other games were better.
