Stylish and Unique Spirit/Card-Themed Old School RPG, January 19, 2012

My first playthrough was in 1994, and I recently rediscovered my Super Nintendo and my old games. I started playing in early December 2011, starting a new save file from scratch. I thought it was a great old-school style RPG with elemental power balances (wind/fire/water/earth) and interesting nuances. The difficulty level isn't very high, but you can only save in town, any non-spirit death = game over, and boss battles can catch you off guard. Because of the way it's done the boss music can shock you and get the heart pumping. Liked that.
The big problem with the game is the dungeon size in chapters four and five... tons of random encounters, sometimes as often as every three steps. This makes the later dungeons into chores and kills the discovery of exploring. (I actually put it down mid-chapter four, but came back after another game became unplayable.)
The emotion I felt upon my second finish was relief! Relief I wouldn't be having future annoying random encounters (even with a full bevy of 81 Fog Cards, Rooks doesn't always go first). If you like old-school RPGs, you'd enjoy one play through. Just to be clear, the 'Arcana' theme is spirits and elementals, no tarot cards. Rooks is a 'cardmaster', one who controls spirits, and is joined by several companions over the course of his journey to find justice for his parents. The music is Celtic-style and appropriate.
Pro-tip: Some weapons/armor can be used as items during battle.

Excellent delivery in format, October 2, 2001

I thought this game really made the most of what SNES had to offer as a system. The graphics didn't try to exceed the capacity of the system in any way but instead, delivered sharp, pleasant graphics in a specific and simple game play format. It was easy and pleasant to get through and the character respresentations were really classy.

If your looking for a great game, look elsewhere all we got here is an average rpg with a crummy story, bad graphics and little fun factor. 2 stars.
