2.0 out of 5 stars You'll find much better free guides with a google search
Had a few tips, but it wasn't all that helpful, and it doesn't help you through the install process. "Setup How-to" should have been cut from the title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice step-by-step guide to configure your Arch Linux machine, March 26, 2013
This review is from: Arch Linux Environment set-up How-To (Paperback)
Interesting book from [...], written by one of Arch Linux Trusted Users.
The topics are well organized, and it is very easy to follow the instructions, and you have pictures even to guide you through this process.

Starting from the very basics, it is good how easily Arch Linux can be still be installed without using the old CLI Installer. Following the steps from generating your fstab to configure your X server with your graphic card drive and your Desktop Environment.

Everything is correct generally, but being Arch Linux a pure rolling release, as the author explains, Arch Linux evolves quicker than other, so there are some things in the book that are no longer officially suported, like the initscript boot.

4.0 out of 5 stars Arch Linux - A Guide, July 19, 2014
By
J. W. Rine (Madison, MS USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Arch Linux is seldom the first choice for a newcomer to the Linux world. Testing the waters with Linux often involves distributions that have point and click installation interfaces. Upon completion, the user has a system with a desktop, some office programs and basic utilities. Users tired of accepting compromise gravitate toward Arch Linux after gaining command line skills. Arch Linux is a rolling release Linux distribution (see Wikipedia). Arch has 5 core principles. They are simplicity, code correctness over convenience, openness, freedom, and it's user-centric. Arch is what you make it. A successful installation is a command prompt. What you do from there is up to you.

For this book review I decided to do a fresh install on my net-book. My installation was successful. I found the Arch Linux Environment Setup How-to, by Ike Devolder, to be a helpful guide for installing Arch Linux. The Arch Wiki is still the definitive resource for Arch. Other sources of useful knowledge can be found in the Arch forums, Google +, and YouTube. This guide is another tool to go in the Arch tool box. It does not replace any of the other tools. It complements those tools with additional information. Since the book is not long, I would recommend reading the complete chapter before trying to follow along with the steps. Detailed information often comes later in the chapter. Using a search engine and the wiki should be the first response to any questions that arise. There will be questions.

I would recommend this book for those interested in using Arch Linux. It does a good job of explaining the Arch philosophy and complements the other Arch resources. A guide points the direction and sets you on the right path. You will still have to make the steps to complete the journey. Thanks to Ike Devolder for his efforts.

Disclosure: I received a free e-book copy for review.

it's a complete setup manual, you can find it online as Arch Wiki but it's worth the money! And it's very complete.

2.0 out of 5 stars Confusing if you don't understand how to work on terminal, July 13, 2014
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This guide was good for me. But it won't be good for you if you don't have any slightest idea of using the terminal. I love Arch, mainly because you build your own system.
This guide is cool, but for people who is very well acquainted with GNU/Linux way of life. If you are a beginner, DON'T BUY IT, you can learn or watch tutorials, but this guide will be a waste if you are still beginning

Seemed like concepts could have been laid out in more concise manner. Left-brainers need to consult with right-brainers before trying to popularize arcane computerese IMHO

A specific guide without any general descriptions. It is far better, if you just use what you can find on the Internet
