Cities and states developed in South Asia between c. BC 800 and AD 250, as Hinduism and Buddhism arose and spread. Drawing on archaeological studies and also on texts and inscriptions, this book explores the character of the early Indian cities, paying particular attention to their art and architecture and analyzing the political ideas that shaped the state systems. The study extends to the opening centuries of the Christian era, offering an Indian perspective on the contacts with the Greek and Roman worlds that followed the invasion by Alexander the Great.

Very authoritative and scholarly. Covers the subject extensively. The next best thing to reading the research papers on the subject. This is one book which must be read by any one who wishes to speak on the subject of "aryas" in general, and ancient South-Asia in particular. A truly excellent book, but then, one expects nothing less from Allchin et al.

The most useful section of the book is the material on Sri Lanka, especially the discovery of Brahmi there for 450 BC. The material on India is presented very unimaginatively and there is an unwarranted, cursory dismissal of the work of Jim Shaffer. The analysis of the Vedic textual sources is very weak and generally incorrect.
