Book Description

This book employs historical archaeological evidence to demonstrate how polite rituals reproduced the social and material world of commerce in colonial Massachusetts. The author situates artifacts within the social contexts descibed in contemporary letters and diaries and depicted in literature and art and demonstrates how the New English merchants selected and adapted contemporary British manners to create a new American form of polite behavior.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and information, November 4, 2011

This review is from: An Archaeology of Manners: The Polite World of the Merchant Elite of Colonial Massachusetts (Contributions To Global Historical Archaeology) (Hardcover)
I read this book for school, and want to read it again and again for pleasure. The authors paint a wonderful portrait of life among the merchant elite, rich with historically accurate detail. The book almost reads more like a novel, but this does not take away from it's accuracy. If you are interested in colonial america or merchants, this is the book for you. Truly a great read.
