5.0 out of 5 stars It came through when nothing else did, August 17, 2010

This review is from: Dexpan Non-Explosive Demolition Agent (Misc.)
I decided to buy Dexpan to get rid of a 6tf wide, (don't know how deep) granite rock in the middle of my lawn I am extending. I tried sledge hammering (got rid of a bit but creates a MESS), shims and wedges (did nothing as I bought too small not knowing anything about them) and I really didn't want to rent a Jackhammer.

I bought Dexpan in a very hot summer week so I advised the customer service to send me #1. I rented a large hammer drill and a 1.5" bit from Homedepot for around $70 for 24 hours. I decided to drill LOTS of holes around 8" deep, not knowing how deep the rock is as I figured I had the drill and the more holes the better. Downside was it took me 7 hours with a few beer breaks. Be careful with it though if you've never used one before, at some points it's like riding a bull.

After finishing up drilling, I rushed the mixing and pouring process a little as I was losing light. The next morning I woke up to a surprise.. NOTHING! Instead the temperature had dropped to around 50 at night and 65 in the day. It looked a little dried out in the morning too so I poured more water on it. I didn't cover any of the holes to start. It then rained heavy for at least 12 hours so I gave it another day and checked it. I woke up to a surprise.. NOTHING!

At this point I wasn't going to give up - after all that drilling. The mix had poured out a bit over the rock but it was nice and wet so I covered the holes up with rocks. I left it over night and didn't dare look at it in the morning. After a day of 85 degrees and nice sun, I returned from work to a surprise.. CRACKS galore! I couldn't agree more with the posts about following the instructions and being patient, I think I would add be sure to get the right temperature Dexpan too, I'm SURE that made the difference to why it worked.

All in all due to the temperature & rain (i'm 99% sure) this took about 50+ hours to do it's thing but hang in there, it comes through if you're in the same boat! Great product!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dexpan Does the Trick, August 6, 2010

I had a large concret stoop outside of my back door that needed to be moved. My Case 580B would not move it, we tried a 30lb electric jack hammer, a concrete saw non of which would break-up the 80 year old concrete. Short of renting an 80lb pneumatic jack hammer at a cost of $200.00 for the weekend nothing I had would touch this block of concrete. My brother-in-law told me about the Dexpan product so i tried it. We dilled 6 holes into the block, mixed the Dexpan, and shoved it into the holes. The next day the block was broken into pieces that my backhoe could handle. The only thing about this product is there is not alot of working time from the time you mix it till it starts to get hot. My suggestion is to make sure you have a really good drill with a mixer paddel (not a grout mixer) or to mix just enough to do one hole at a time. Anyway 5 out of 5 stars this product is great i only wish i would have bought the 44lb box.

5.0 out of 5 stars It really works...., May 3, 2011
This review is from: Dexpan Non-Explosive Demolition Agent (Misc.)
I went round and round with this product before it finally worked. I had a piece of granite or bluestone peaking in my back yard which I just wanted to take the tip off so the rest could be buried. This rock was totally dense and had no veins to take advantage of. Whatever stone this was it could be compared to Kryptonite! I had an excavator try to dig it out and drop bolders on it, I believe it is part of the actual ledge in my back yard. Nothing worked. I had a jack hammer on the rock and it only dulled the tips. This rock was approx. 6ft by 3 ft sticking up about 1 ft high at the peak.
The first time around I rented a core drill with a 2in bit. I bored about a dozen holes in the rock about 8in deep and used only 1 bag of dexpan. After about 1 week the rock did crack but only half of it. I was able to clear away the debris but something more needed to be done. On my second attempt I rented an 1in 1/2 heavy duty hammer drill and added more holes to this monster rock. After smoking the bit I had some more holes for my new attack. I used two more bags of dexpan and after waiting a week I had some hairline cracks. At this point I rinsed off the rock and re-saturated the dexpan holes. I was able to get a couple pieces off but i think the water reactivated something, because the following day my hairline cracks were deep thick cracks which i was able to use a pry bar to pop off the 2nd half of the rock.
Either way this product seems to take a very long time but does work. As blasting was my next and last resort I glad I was able to do this myself. Between the dexpan and renting these tools I probably spent about 500 bucks getting this rock out.
P.S. Be careful using a core drill or hammer drill, with such a large bit it is easy to bind on the rock and break your hands. It was a total wresting matching getting so many large holes in such a heavy rock.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product and company, October 13, 2010

This review is from: Dexpan Non-Explosive Demolition Agent (Misc.)
I've used this type of product on two different concrete demolition projects and it is very effective when used as instructed. Hole patterns are very important for achieving the desired result so that part is up to the user. Drilling holes, filling with demolition agent and letting it work overnite certainly beat using a jackhammer for hours !

This particular job entailed removing a long concrete step from a patio slab while not breaking the slab. That required drilling horizontal holes for the mixture about a foot apart with parting holes drilled between to weaken the concrete where I wanted it to break just above the slab. Filling horizontal holes requires a method of filling and keeping the holes filled completely so I used intersecting vertical fill holes at the blind end with PVC pipe elbows glued into the open ends to provide a riser on the opening. It was very successful and I have photos to demonstrate the method for anyone interested in my method.

Dexpan Company was amazingly responsive when I asked a question on delivery date by email on a weekend evening and I received a response within a few hours. My order arrived on the corrected date in that email so I am quite impressed with this company doing business right and beyond my expectations. I will do business with this company again and recommend them highly.

Works exactly as advertised. Had to remove 3'x3'x2' boulder neighbor rolled down into a tree in our yard. Drilled 1-1/2" holes 20" deep. Mixed Dexpan. Poured in. Left overnight. Presto- many fractures, many pieces, lifted away. Success.
