A unique novel with gothic elements, written by the son of Nathaniel Hawthorne. The story focuses on the title character's mysterious malady. Every seven years, he falls into a trance-like state to emerge with one of two alternate personalities. This book has it all - insanity, death, a secret chamber, a ghost, revenge, duels, a court trial, star-crossed lovers, and a grisly ending. A must-read for fans of strange or gothic literature.
