3.0 out of 5 stars A WHO'S WHO OF ACTORS/ACTRESSES, July 31, 2005

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Archie-Return to Riverdale [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I had taped this movie years ago from TV and caused me some problem finding it. The actual title is Archie - To Riverdale and Back Again, which doesn't make sense since he elected to stay in Riverdale at the end of the movie. I loved Christopher Rich in The Charmings, and Fran Ryan in The Wizard. I'm a Picket Fences fan, so it was nice to see Lauren Holly as Betty. Of course way back when, I watched Charles Angels with David Doyle as their boss' frontman. And who could forget Sam Whipple in those "Please don't squeeze the Charmin" commercials? I thought they did a pretty good job updating those highschoolers into working adults, though I do think they overdid it a little with Betty. She's okay as a schoolteacher, but taking a shower in Archie's place??? And I couldn't buy Mr. Lodge endangering all those lives with a bomb. I really enjoyed the scene with Jughead and his son rapping to Sugar Sugar, but didn't dig the new Big Ethel. It's a movie I won't take seriously, but I will enjoy the silliness of it when I am in the mood for some schmaltz and nostalgia.

1.0 out of 5 stars A poor tribute to an American icon, December 9, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Archie-Return to Riverdale [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I have been a huge fan of Archie Comics for many years and still am. This film should never have even been made. If it was made at all, it should have only portrayed the wonderful world of Riverdale, U.S.A. the way it was created and intended to be. Archie and the gang are perpetual teenagers and are not intended to ever "grow-up". It's what has made the comics work and so much fun all these years. Archie should never choose between Betty and Veronica. Jughead should never start liking girls, never get or keep a job and should never watch what he eats. Reggie should never reform and become a nice guy. This film put these innocent, likable characters in adult situations that have absolutely no place in the world of Riverdale. Archie and his fiancee living together? Mr. Lodge trying to have Archie murdered? Betty and Veronica both trying to seduce Archie in a hotel room? This is certainly not the Riverdale I grew up with and still enjoy to this day. Some things should not ever change or be tampered with. While the cast did their best with the poor script, it never really should have been made in the first place. By comparison, the reunion film of "The Andy Griffith Show", "Return To Mayberry", while it made it quite clear that things had indeed changed in Mayberry over the years, people had died, grown older and moved on and moved away, at least it did manage to preserve the integrity, dignity and charm of the series on which it was based. That is much more than I can say for this film. It was and is a complete waste of time and talent. Better to read the comics and give this turkey a miss.

5.0 out of 5 stars Return to Riverdale, September 26, 2001

This was a very neat movie! Everyone was in charector except Mr. Lodge and somewhat, Jughead. All in all it was a great movie I think! I've been reading Archie comics for years and I wasn't very disapointed! The only problem is it doesnt stick to typical wholesome Archie culture, however by today's standards it's very very tame! Yes, so buy it, Archie rules!
