Editorial Reviews

2012 album from the British Jazz collective. The album sees Joe Acheson, the musical mastermind behind Hidden Orchestra, continuing to explore and develop many themes that emerged on their debut, Night Walks, adding new ideas, guest players, instruments and found sounds; to name a few, listen up for tap-dancing, bagpipe drones, and Acheson stomping in snow and ice. New instruments contributing to the many layers of Archipelago include the musical saw of multi-skilled cellist Su-a Lee; clarsach and electro-harp from Scottish folk musician Mary MacMaster; clarinet care of Czech musician/composer Floex; and Phil Cardwell's uniquely versatile trumpet tones. In addition, you'll hear a range of kantele and zithers which Joe found and recorded at a school for the blind in Finland, while on location for a radio documentary.

Hidden Orchestra's Archipelago is a richer application of the group's sounds than their 2010 release Night Walks. The orchestration is tighter, the melodies are more complex, and a revolving door of guest musicians provide rich layers of sounds not previously heard in the group's repertoire. Fans may prefer Night Walks to Archipelago, but there is no disputing the compositional evolution and greater precision of execution.

Three of the ten tracks were previously released as singles, so there are only really seven new tracks for fans who have closely followed the group. All ten play together nicely as a full set, running the gamut from the eerily emotive Vorka to the bombastic Fourth Wall without any hiccups that would disrupt back-to-back play.

Fans of Cinematic Orchestra, Bonobo, Emancipator, Mancini, Morricone and Adamson will be richly rewarded. Well played, Hidden Orchestra - I can't wait to see what tricks you have up your sleeve for your next LP.

Beautiful album. Everytime the needle touches this vinyl there's some magic that happens. Glad there's still great music out there.

If you loved their first collection, Night Walks, you'll love Archipelago. You'll find the same shifting instrumentals of mystery, outstanding musicianship, and superior compositions...if you enjoy Balmorhea and Floratone, Hidden Orchestra will take you to another destination among the experimental instrumental groups that blend rock, jazz and classical elements (even some trip-hop in the case of Hidden Orchestra) in new, original ways. After listening to Balmorhea's latest, Stranger, I was even more impressed with Archipelago. Though there isn't necessarily anything different in the choice of instrumentation, Archipelago makes each composition timeless and brilliant on it's own, a rare feet.

I first uncovered the treasure that is Hidden Orchestra in 2010 following their release of the masterful Night Walks through a free amazon mp3 offering of the track Windfall. I was immediately stunned by the powerful intricacy of the group and have sought out every bit of product from this amazing quartet's as-yet limited oeuvre (even the eclectically cool mixtapes).

When I saw that a sophomoric work was set a release date (a remix-laden EP was offered in the interim - highly recommended), I immediately ordered it and anxiously awaited its arrival. What can I say; its just as satisfying as NW but feels a bit more concentrated: where NW seemed to amble along until stumbling upon grandiose tonal explosions, this album feels a bit more intentioned, with purposeful builds and a more pervasive melodious theme, evinced most notably by the presence of the opening Overture. Simply bombastic and beautiful all the same. Great music appropriate for any occasion imaginable, even for the most disparaging of musical preferences.

I would make recommendations based on contemporary comparisons, but, to my knowledge, there simply are none. This band manages to meld classical movement with heavy grooves and simultaneously subversive and overt beauty, in a seemingly unequivocal manner.

A seminal performance by a group deserving of boundless recognition as a truly pioneering artistic conglomeration. Pick up Archipelago. Pick up Night Walks. Download the mixtapes (free on the band's website!). Do what you can to get your hands on this music - you won't be disappointed!
