4.0 out of 5 stars You get what you pay for - except for shipping and handling
This product performs as listed. I hung 4 of these in my single car garage and now when they are on and the door is open, the airplanes line up for final approach. These are very bright with the correct bulb. These lights are inexpensive so don't get fooled into believing you should receive heavy guage, name brand electronics, and ultra sturdy equipment. This item simply works and has no bells or whistles.

Amazon's shipping department has really cost this company's reputation. Because the packaging of three of my four boxes was as the manufacturer origninally shipped them, when they were received by me, they were broken, slashed open, had busted tape, etc. The other box shipped to me was sent by Amazon in an Amazon shipping box. This box was perhaps of a size large enough to contain the entire order, quadrupled. Yes, at the least, including packing materials, 16 lights in OEM packaging could have fit in this box. Instead, it contained 1 light and a whole mess of packing paper. The outside of this box looks as if it had a run-in with Edward Scissorhands and a tape dispenser.

Amazon needs to address it's packaging. Precision Products makes a good low expense Shop Light.

We bought 10+ of these a couple months ago to provide localized lighting in a warehouse space. Half of them have failed. Initially they're fine. Then after some random period of time they start to flicker. Then they pop their internal fuse.

This occurs because a capacitor on the inside overheats; eventually melting the insulation off an adjacent wire that then shorts to the capacitor, blowing the fuse due to the short. Unlike most shop lights, the ballast is not in it's own metal enclosure. It's not easy to replace the ballast with a different unit.

It may be that the overheat is due to bad quality power, cold weather (60F), cheap tubes, or bad contacts to the bulb. Our tubes work fine with different manufacturer's fixtures. Whatever the precise problem doesn't matter. By the time you've paid for shipping you're better off running to XXXX XXXXX and buying the cheapest POC there; it'll last longer than these.

I too once thought these might be worth a try despite bad reviews; the problem isn't just the shipping.

1.0 out of 5 stars Cheap.... and quality to match, September 14, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Archipelago Lighting SL2-SS 120-Volt 48-Inch Shop Light with 7-Inch Reflector, Stainless Steel Powder Coat (Tools & Home Improvement)
I got one of these for my basement. I was actually using it to start some seedlings last winter. After a few weeks the switch started behaving erratically and soon after that the light stopped working completely. I complained and a replacement light was duly shipped to me. After a couple of months the new one stopped working. Pressure of work and a new baby prevented me from complaining about it again so I never returned the second one. It is still gathering dust in my basement. I thought that there wasn't much that could go wrong with a fixture like this so I got a cheap one. My mistake. Don't bother with this item.

1.0 out of 5 stars quit working after one week, March 26, 2008
This review is from: Archipelago Lighting SL2-SS 120-Volt 48-Inch Shop Light with 7-Inch Reflector, Stainless Steel Powder Coat (Tools & Home Improvement)
Bought these to put in my garage. Both quit working after one week. I had an old lamp still in the garage and put one of the new bulbs I had bought for these new lamps and the new bulb worked fine in the old lamp. Don't waste your money. It would be a pain to find a box to return them in. Piece of junk as far as I'm concerned...

1.0 out of 5 stars Junk, how do I pick minus 1o stars?, March 7, 2010

This are absolute junk. I bought a couple expecting they may not be the highest gauge material, but I expected them to function as a light and in my view, they don't even work. Other posters talked about the flicker issue over time and I was lucky to have it day one right out of the box. I expected the light to operate properly though I didn't expect long lasting, high gage materials, but it doesn't even do that. This product should not be sold at all - in my view, it doesn't work out of the box and it a pile of junk. I'm so angry that this garbage can even be sold - it doesn't even do the basic function of its intent. I didn't buy this to say money, I need two fixtures, there were available - not at a phemoninal price, just a typical price and I'm so sorry I wasted my time on this junk. They should be pulled from the shelves and scrapped. C'mon, its some sheet metal, a ballast and some light contacts - how can someone turn that into a pile of garbage? Its not high tech and the tecnology has been around for 30+ years, yet this product makes the worst one I've ever encountered - toss you money in the fireplace or toilet - either will make you happier than owning this product. A complete waste of time, they stole time from my life while I mount this junk. Flourescent fixtures are highly non-technical nor cutting edge, yet this one has managed to pursue pure garbage. I can't emphasize enough how this product doesn't even perform the most basic aspect that its intended to do. Seriously, burn you money and it will give you more joy that this product.

This item may have looked nice (like the picture) at some point, but when it got to me it was dinged and dented so bad I'm ashamed to hang it in my garage. It still sits in the box it came in with NO protective packing. It was probably a return from someone who promptly sent it back - like I should have. Save yourself the aggrevation of buying from this vendor thru Amazon.

1.0 out of 5 stars ballast broke within 2 months of using it, June 16, 2008
This review is from: Archipelago Lighting SL2-SS 120-Volt 48-Inch Shop Light with 7-Inch Reflector, Stainless Steel Powder Coat (Tools & Home Improvement)
After about 2 months of using it, it stopped working. (Nothing happened when you pulled on the chain.) I took it to a repair place to see if it was the switch that was broken, or the ballast. Unfortunately, it was the ballast, so the thing is junk. An expensive piece of junk.

Other reviews warned of damaged product (more than 1 reviewer), both lights I ordered came damaged right from the box, Looking at how they were packaged' it's no wonder. Amazon did a great job of refunding my money in a timely order resulting in no loss of money to me, for that I'm grateful
